Team Rose Shootout: 2020 Evals
PrepHoopsIllinois covered the Team Rose Shootout at Mt. Carmel High School over the weekend. This great event allowed us to evaluate prospects in a variety of classes and college levels. Here are our evaluations from the class of 2020.
SF Jabari Chiphe (Walter Payton – 2020)
The day began with our evaluation of this intriguing sophomore wing. Chiphe is a 6’3” rangy two guard that will need to add strength long term, but has a lot of game. He is super smooth with the basketball handling getting to the hoop on slippery drives. Finished at the rim for at least three and-1 opportunities. Was an active rebounder as well. Didn’t show off his jump shot much in this game. Over the head release on his shot. Like the upside in this wing and is someone that is worth monitoring for low-major D1 programs early in the process.
PG Reggie Strong (Farragut – 2020)
Strong is one of the top prospects regardless of position in the 2020 class. The explosive lefty lead guard is wiry strong and has the ability to get to the rim. Slick handling it getting to the rim and can hit a mid-range jumper. Passes well when he gets on the interior with dump off passes and crisp dishes to shooters. Rebounds well and is a tough defender that should be a plus on ball defensive threat in college. Jump shot wasn’t very consistent against Joliet West. Top 10 2020 prospect had only 8 points. Mid-major prospect.
SG Destin Whitaker (Romeoville – 2020)
Whitaker is one of those prospects that I am intrigued by with his size, length, and projectability. Definitely needs to add strength going forward. Whitaker is a smooth athlete in the open floor getting a transition finish. Not very productive at this stage, but one we will continue to track. He had 5 points.
SG Jamari McClendon (Hope – 2020)
McClendon is a 6’2” shooting guard that plays tough around the hoop. Gets on the offensive glass for put backs and scores best in the paint. Showed some scoring potential going for 7 points.
SG Ramean Hinton (Curie – 2020)
Hinton is a kid that is intriguing to us. He broke out in July with All-In with how competitive he is along with his athleticism and toughness. The 6’3” sophomore shooting guard only plays limited minutes for Curie, but definitely flashes D1 ability. He hit a three from the corner and handles it well. Got an offensive rebound put back and got to the charity stripe at a nice clip. He finished with 8 points in their game against St. Rita. Hinton is definitely one of those prospects in the sophomore class that has a lot of upside and is just scratching the surface of his potential long term.
PG Alec Millender (St. Rita – 2020)
Millender is a 6’0” point guard that has some projectability. Long arms and is a smooth athlete. Gets to the line at a high rate with his quickness off the bounce. Hit a three, but also took some bad shots. He had 7 points. D2 prospect at this stage.
