Most Intriguing Prospects from Maize v Andover
What a thrill ride at Maize High School this Friday night for the Andover v Maize varsity boys game. If Andover wasn’t supposed to compete at a high level tonight, nobody told them that. The whole Andover team played with a lot of confidence and was all over the floor for loose balls.
Andover started out slow and found themselves down 29-17 at half. Andover continued to chip away at the lead, forced an overtime, and weathered the Caleb Grill storm to win in double OT. Andrew Gagnon (2019) hit a layup with about four seconds to play over Caleb Grill (2019) to take the lead and get the win, 75-74.
Andrew Gagnon (2019) Andover High School– Andrew not only hit the game winner for Andover but really acted as the engine to keep them in the game down the stretch. Andrew had no problems getting in the paint versus Maize and either making the right play or getting to the line.
Andrew lead Andover in scoring with 20 points and on multiple occasions seemed to bully his way into the teeth of the Maize defense despite only standing at 5’11’’.
Caleb Grill (2019) Maize High School– Caleb is definitely the most well known prospect of the contest holding a division 1 offer from South Dakota State University. However, Caleb struggled in the first half, unable to get in a rhythm offensively and appeared somewhat bothered by Andover’s sporadic denial of him touching the ball.
Caleb really started coming alive when Maize got into transition where he could showcase his athleticism. He came out more aggressive in the second half and hit some really big shots down the stretch to respond to Andover’s runs.
Caleb led all scorers with 24 points on a night where his shot wasn’t falling the ball was not bouncing his way really showing his ability to impact the game even when everything isn’t going his way.
Devon Koehn (2019) Maize High School– Tonight Devon was the player with the biggest impact outside of scoring. Devon was protecting the paint and controlling the boards early in the contest but also chipped in seven points.
Devon is a lengthy 5-man who stands at 6’6’’ who showcased a little of everything versus Andover. He scored inside, drove and finished from the free throw line, and showcased a little passing as well.
Devon will need to put on more weight if playing in the post at the next level.
Jack Johnson (2021) Andover High School– Jack was undoubtedly the most talented underclassman in the contest and has the potential to be one of the top rated players in Kansas in the 2021 class. Jack had an impressive debut starting for Andover High School and contributing on both sides of the ball.
Jack hit multiple three’s down the stretch that either put Andover ahead or kept them in the game. He showed a tremendous amount of composure for being a freshman in those high pressure situations. Jack finished the game with 15 points and will be a big part of Andover’s rotation this year.
Chase Schreiner (2019) Maize High School– Despite only standing at 5’9’’, Chase had a huge impact on the game scoring 16 points and creating numerous opportunities for his teammates with his quickness.
Chase showcased his opportunity to shoot the ball especially early on in the contest and is a talented defender who is able to move his feet well. Chase and Caleb Grill accounted for more than half of Maize’s offense and will be a tandem to lookout for this year.
Connor O’Connell (2018) Andover High School– Connor immediately impacted the game with his offensive rebounding ability and extra effort on defense and loose balls.
Connor plays bigger than 6’2’’ and protected Andover’s momentum multiple times with his energy and effort rebounding the ball.
Cade McGaugh (2019) Maize High School– Cade did a nice job coming off the bench for Maize and creating scoring opportunities for himself.
He was able to make an impact in limited minutes finishing with seven points in the contest. Look for Cade to be a solid player coming off of the bench for Maize this season who can impact the scoreboard.
