Recruiting Report: Tyson Cathy (2018)
A solid small college prospect, North Liberty 6-foot-6 center Tyson Cathy already has two Midwest NAIA offers, and could be making a college decision soon.
Benedictine and Bellevue both have offered the cerebral big-man, and he’s heading into his senior season with a head full of steam.
“As far as recruitment, I’ve heard from St. Mary (KS), Benedictine College and Bellevue University. And then I’ve been talking more and more with the coaches, almost once a week,” said Cathy.
“I’m looking forward to having a good season, and seeing if I can get my name out there so I can play bigger and better basketball after high school.”
Whichever school lands the 2018 post will get a guy who’s not only able to man the paint, but is working to become increasingly versatile.
“My impact would be that I’m a down low scorer, dominant player in the post, both offensive and defensive. And when it comes to guarding, I can guard both small and big,” said Cathy. “And when it comes to rebounding, I can get them against big people and out of area rebounds, when I’m not in the area to rebound.”
This past spring and summer, Cathy played with Kansas City Pacers Blue 17U. It was a great experience, and beneficial for his skill-development.
“Over the 17U season, I really worked on being able to handle the ball, because a lot of players are much bigger than me, so I had to play smaller positions,” said Cathy.
“I also had to develop a shot, and learn how to play from the perimeter, and get easy buckets for me and my teammates in that area,”
Now, with his senior season on the horizon — the Eagles’ first game is Dec. 1 — Cathy says his role is to be an experienced leader to the younger guys.
“My role as a senior is that I’m a returning varsity member who has been starting since my junior year. We were a young team last year so we didn’t do very well. But I expect that this season with our experience that we’re going to have a great year,” said Cathy.
“My role as a starting big-man is to score when I get the ball, and to help the team out and help out the younger players.”
As for his recruitment, there’s a chance he may commit in the next month, but at the same time, he’s still very open.
“I’m waiting to see how the first couple of games go, and if I wanted to not have to worry about recruitment, then I was going to commit after the first couple of games,” said Cathy.
“But I don’t really have a set timetable as far as that all goes.”
