Prospect Spotlight: Dylan Catron (2019)
We see a lot of late bloomers at the high school level, and one of the reasons behind some of them are late growth spurts. For Chilhowie big man Dylan Catron, he shot up about six inches from his freshman to his sophomore season.
Since his growth spurt, Catron has seen his game change in various ways. His length and skill set make him a big time mismatch problem, especially in a smaller area without the size to match up with him.
While many will say he should just sit in the post and score it, that’s not his game..
“I’m a stretch big man that likes to take what the defense gives me,” Catron said. “I can shoot the three if the defender’s sagging off me, but if they press up on me I’ll take them to the hole.”
Growing up as a guard, Catron had to develop the skill set to be able to handle the basketball and make plays for others. Because of this, his versatility has allowed him to take over for his team and play all over the floor for Chilhowie.
“My ball handling is really good for my size because I wasn’t always this tall and long,” he said. “In high school they rely on me to play some guard and not just be a big.”
After a breakout summer with Spectrum, he’s still relatively under the radar but with a big junior season he could see some interest. He says it’s his ability to play multiple positions and do a lot of things on the floor are the biggest reasons college coaches should recruit him.
“I can honestly do it all on the floor as a big man. I can shoot, I can defend pretty good I can block shots and I can handle the ball well like I said before. I’m still working on my vertical and getting stronger moving forward.”
As for now, Catron’s just focused on what he can do to help Chilhowie get better with every day.
“My goals this season are just to make my teammates around me better and to win a state championship.“
There’s always some steals in the Southwest part of the state, and Catron is making a case to be one of the guys to keep an eye on in the 2019 class. With a statement season, expect to hear more about him and his recruitment coming up soon.
