This article is a five-part series detailing the top 10 players in the Borderland area by position group. The shooting guards were assessed by their off-ball movement, shooting, perimeter defense, and ball-handling skills.
10: Owen Bustillos Owen Bustillos TX
10: Owen Bustillos Owen Bustillos TX
Bustillos played on a team that was not lacking wing scoring at El Paso High. But on any given night, he could lead them in scoring or go on runs where he scored in bunches. He has a good outside shot and can hit the occasional movement three if given the opportunity. Any team in the Borderland would want a player like Bustillos because his spacing and proficient outside shooting is rare to find.
9: Donovan Mozer
9: Donovan Mozer
Mozer is a plus athlete who doesn’t fit the typical mold of a catch-and-shoot 2-guard. However, he plays downhill and in the flow of Canutillo’s offense. The Eagles were a score by committee team, so Mozer wasn’t tasked with taking on a huge scoring load but that should change his senior year. Assuming his jumper keeps progressing, Canutillo will have one of the top seniors playing shooting guard for them next season.
8: Noah Hall
8: Noah Hall
The first of two Franklin 2-guards to make the list. Hall played a fair amount at the three this season because of Franklin’s guard depth but this kid is a shooting guard. He’s a confident shooter who can’t go unaccounted for on the court or teams will pay. He has a nifty pump fake and step by move that gets him open looks as defenders fly by, but he is a willing driver if given the lane.
7: Jazhiel Herrera
7: Jazhiel Herrera
Herrera is more of a slasher who likes to penetrate defenses as opposed to coming off screens and shooting. He’s an underrated athlete with good leaping ability and speed but he isn’t overly reliant on his athletic traits. It will be interesting to see Herrera role next season considering Franklin is losing some major talent at the guard position. I assume he will have more on-ball responsibilities.
6: Cason Golding
6: Cason Golding
One of the best catch-and-shoot prospects in the Borderland. Golding can shoot with the best of them, and he fits the exact style of play you would imagine out of your starting two-guard. The Coronado guard was sidelined for basically all of his junior year, but he is too talented to leave off this list. If is able to return to full strength next season, he will have college programs interested because of his shooting prowess.
5: Derek Mendez
5: Derek Mendez
An elite perimeter defender who will take all the chances you give him from beyond the arch. Mendez is one of the best defensive players in the Borderland, regardless of position. He plays with a high motor and really excels as an on-ball defender. At his best, he is attached to the hip to whoever he is guarding and a willing 3-point shooter. When his jumper is falling, he can absolutely change a game.
4: AC Munoz AC Munoz 6'5" | SG Mayfield | 2024 State NM
4: AC Munoz AC Munoz 6'5" | SG Mayfield | 2024 State NM
One of the best players in Las Cruces who is an offensive mismatch when healthy. Unfortunately, his senior season was cut short due to injury. Nevertheless, he is a 6-4 guard who can shoot and put the ball down on the floor, making him an elite three level scorer. Despite losing his senior season, he will find a spot on a college team once he is healthy.
3: Nicholas Sapien
3: Nicholas Sapien
He was Mr. Reliable all season long for Pebble Hills and an adept perimeter scorer. Sapien plays exactly how you would think a shooting guard should play: great off-ball mover who can catch-and-shoot. Moreover, he doesn’t need much space to get his shot off. He was the Spartans best scoring threat every time down the floor and could do it on all three levels.
2: Savion Jordan
2: Savion Jordan
The first of two Chapin players to make this list, Jordan is the best shooting guard I have scouted besides his teammate at number one. The junior possesses elite athletic traits, and they show up on the court. He’s one of the best zone defenders because of his ability to read the next pass and freakish ability to close space. His offensive game takes a back seat to Chapin’s depth of talent, but he could easily be a double-digit scorer if needed. He’s the best shooting guard in the class of 2025 and I don’t see that changing in a year.
1: Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6'4" | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX
1: Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6'4" | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX
Hymes is more of a positionless player at the high school level who spent time at the two, three, and four. He could honestly be the top-rated player across those three positions but ideally, I see him as a two-guard. Moreover, that’s probably his best suited position at the next level. He’s massive for a guard, which is why head coach Rodney Lewis deployed at multiple positions throughout the season. In terms of two-way impact, no player is better than Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6’4″ | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX in the Borderland.
