DMV All-Defense Team
In anticipation of the upcoming high school season, we will be taking a closer look at various teams and players throughout the DMV. Below we take a closer look at five players, one at each position, who are able constantly lock down their opponents throughout the course of a game.
PG | JARED BYNUM | GEORGETOWN PREP ’18
Point guard was definitely the most difficult position to choose, but there are many reasons why Jared Bynum gets the nod here. He’s not the biggest guard, but the St. Joe’s commit has a 6’2 wingspan, and averaged 2 steals per game on the UAA. Some will say that the best defense is a good offense. One thing we love about Bynum, aside from the fact that he’s a vocal leader who is always communicating, is that he rarely turns the ball over.
WG | BRANDON SLATER | PAUL VI ’18
This list could simply not be complete without Brandon Slater. The 6’6 Villanova commit, who has effectively defended every position at the high school level, did more of the same this summer with Team Takeover. Slater’s versatility, intelligence, toughness and willingness to lay his body makes him indispensable to any team.
WF | DEMETRIUS MIMS | POLY ’18
Not only is Demetrius Mims a very good rebounder out of his area, but at 6’5+, he is one of the toughest and most versatile perimeter defenders in the region. Not only is athletic enough to stay with smaller, quicker guards, but Mims isn’t afraid to challenge and repel shots at the rim.
PF | ARMANDO BACOT | TRINITY EPISCOPAL ’19
We found it difficult to exclude Armando Bacot from this list. The 6’10 power forward was a double double machine on the Adidas Gauntlet this summer with Team Loaded. He averaged a team high 9.2 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. The scary thing is that he still has one more year of AAU left.
C | HUNTER DICKINSON | DEMATHA ’20
Who wouldn’t want to have a vocal, intelligent 7 footer on the back line of their defense? Even though he’s only played one year of high school ball, Hunter Dickinson is arguably the most dominant paint presence in the WCAC. The rising sophomore, who was the only player in his class invited to the NBPA Top 100 Camp, was impressive this summer playing up on the EYBL with Team Takeover.
