Our next team feature is the Gateway Charter Griffins who are coming off one of their best seasons in school history. The Griffins won their first district title in school history as well as reaching the regional semifinals in 2022-2023.
Head Coach: RJ Jones, 5th Season
Class: 3A
2022-2023 Record: 23-6
Key Returners: Patrick Johnson 6-7 PF (2025). The junior forward plays with a dose of length and athleticism on both ends of the floor whether it’s finishing lobs or battling on the glass for rebounds. He is explosive on the attack for the basket as he has a smooth handle for his size. On the defensive end, he has a knack for blocking shots as well as play with great energy. College coaches should be getting on his radar soon as he can be a viable threat in a variety of ways.
Gabriel Timmons
Gabriel Timmons
Key Returners: Gabriel Timmons 6-1 CG (2024). Timmons is a skilled downhill scorer who uses a lot of flashes to finish at the front of the rim. He is also an elite shooter from the mid-range where he can score off the bounce or off the catch. He led the team in points, assists and steals as a junior last season. On the defensive end, Timmons plays with an elusive amount of energy and has a knack for guarding mismatches where he is very active and play at a high level.
Key Addition: Noah Cutler 5-10 PG (2024). Cutler comes to Gateway Charter from Charlotte where he was more of the facilitator but don’t sleep on his shooting ability. He displays a great IQ and feel for the game where he gets his teammates involved often. On the offensive end, he is exceptionally quick when he has the basketball in his hands where he can blow by the defender and finish at the front of the rim. Cutler is committed to Alma College in Michigan.
Highlights
Sleeper Prospect: Trey Fogle 6-1 PG (2025). Fogle has one of the quickest releases of a jump shot I’ve seen. He brings a high IQ and moves exceptionally well without the basketball in his hands. Fogle is a true definition of a three-level scorer who can impact the game in a variety of ways. On the defensive end, Fogle can guard on-the-ball as well as be very active in the passing lanes where he can turn defense into offense in a hurry.
