Recruiting Report: Tate Hebrink (2018)
Tate Hebrink has long been one of the underrated players in the state. He’s starting to get his due though, thanks to a stellar summer with D1 Rise.
Hebrink, a 6-foot point guard from Austin, spends his winters in a complementary role playing with Both and Duoth Gach and the Packers. When given an opportunity to showcase his game a little more, Hebrink broke out in a big way, standing out in seemingly every tournament with his AAU team and his high school team.
“I have kind of thought about that,” Hebrink said. “Playing with Both and Duoth down here in Austin, they take on big roles and take a lot of the shots. It’s kind of nice playing AAU where I can look for my shot a little more and play my own style.”
If there was a true breakout performance, it might’ve been in the Breakdown Summer State Tournament where Hebrink scored 26 points in the tournament championship game – a close loss to St. Thomas Academy. the Gach brothers didn’t play in that game and while Hebrink won’t need to shoulder that kind of load during the high school season, he showed just how good he is in his own respect.
There’s a lot to like about Hebrink’s game. A lot. He’s a heady point guard who seems to always make the right play at the right time. He’s a very good perimeter shooter, a strong facilitator and playmaker and he can play effectively both on and off the ball. He’s a smart defender and his instincts allow him to be especially disruptive in helpside. Hebrink also showed this summer though that he’s got man-to-man defensive chops necessary to play at the next level.
“I think I got a lot better,” said Hebrink. “Playing really good guards, Matt [Todd], Calvin [Wishart]; all of those guys. It’s really nice to play against those top guys to figure out where you are and it gets you better.”
Hebrink had drawn a little bit of college interest as of the start of the AAU season but it’s picked up considerably thanks to a strong summer.
“I’ve gotten more interest,” said Hebrink. “Grand View University, Valley City State, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, River Falls and LaCrosse. Graceland is another one that I’m still interested in as well. I’m not in a hurry to make a decision. I’ll go on some visits and I think I’ll just go on gut feeling when the time is right.”
