Recruiting Report: Gilbert Otoo (2019)
Gilbert Otoo, a class of 2019 wing at St. Vincent Pallotti, is a flat out sleeper among others in his class. While in Las Vegas with 6th Man Warriors, he showed the ability to score the ball at a high level.
“I am a 6’5″ wing forward who can score it on all 3 levels. Post, midrange, and 3. My midrange jumper is my best asset on offense. I can also put it on the floor and attack from the wing at will. I share the ball with all my teammates, and on defense I can guard the perimeter and the post,” said Otoo of his overall game. “One thing I do on the court that most people don’t see is defend, and keep the best scorer on the other team from scoring.”
We’ve had a number of opportunities to evaluate Otoo while with his high school team, most recently at the DeMatha Summer League. He is clearly a high IQ player who works well without the ball, and makes good decisions while in possession. Pallotti is a team that likes to push the ball in transition, and Otoo fits in nicely with their philosophy, and doesn’t give up much on the other end.
“My most improved aspect of my game over the past 12 months is being able to play the wing position. My ability to dribble the ball in transition and in the half court set. My handles have tightened up, and I’ve gotten much quicker in order to play the wing,” Otoo explained. “The next part of my game I need to work on is my athletic ability, and tightening up my game. My handles, shot, and IQ. The game would be much easier for me if I was a little more athletic.”
Another thing we like about Otoo is that he’s a great student.
“I’m a straight A student that takes Advanced Placement courses, and my GPA is a 4.34,” he stated. “I have two division 1 schools recruiting me: Yale and Holy Cross.”
What can Otoo bring to a college program?
“I can bring my ability to score the ball, and defend most positions to a school. I have a will to win games, and I always work hard in every aspect of the game. I am very coachable, and a great team player.”
