Prospect update 2019: Phillip Smith.
Phillp Smith, 6’5″ WF/WG, 2019. Bullis HS Potomac MD. Grassroots Mid Atlantic Select 16 & U.
Phillip is a very talented wing who will start this season at Bullis HS in his junior year. We have been very impressed with his play in the DeMatha BSN summer League and all around skills. Phillip says,”Over the past year I have made a big jump in my basketball development. I am more athletic and I have improved on both sides of the ball. I can now score from all 3 levels and have improved my ball handling. Despite these improvements Phillip is far from satisfied and adds, ” I work on basketball 6-7 days a week, train with my Trainer Darren McClinton (Springbrook HS, JMU grad) with fellow 2019 teammate CJ Amsellem. Also, I train with my Grassroots Coach James Lee from Mid Atlantic Select. Both Coaches have helped us tremendously. We work on many explosion drills, attacking and getting to the rim. Since plyometrics are so draining we only do them 2 times a week, but hard. Coach Lee and Coach McClinton do a great job on allowing our bodies to recover and get stronger and more flexible. Additionally, we do drills and get instruction on phases of basketball.”
This summer Phillips says, I am trying to become more of a rim protector and while my on ball defense has improved, I will always being working on defense. He adds, “On offense, my 3 point shot off the dribble is a ahead of my spot up, therefore I am putting in time to improve my spot up 3 and still improve my off the dribble shooting. At this time I feel my mid range game is very solid, but CJ, my teammates and myself are hard workers always trying improve all areas of basketball, even the ones we a are good at.”
Currently Phillip has heavy interest from Brown Holy Cross and George Mason. Most importantly, he is an excellent student and carries a 3.6 GPA. Phillip says, “Both of my parents give me great support and my role models. I am very happy I am at Bullis with Coach Kelley.
We will be covering Bullis extensively this year as the Bulldogs attempt to repeat as the IAC Champions and it could very well come down to repeat match-up of Georgetown Prep vs. Bullis for the IAC title won by Bullis last year 62-60 over Georgetown Prep. We will be writing some more reports for Bullis HS and their players.this summer.
