Expert Analysis
Robbie Hodin | Prep Hoops Scout
Wertz was a large catalyst in Governor’s comeback. He’s a fantastic close-out attacker, which is how he scored a lot of his buckets; he reads the angle that the defender is closing out at and does a great job of attacking the top foot. Once he gets there, he’s an excellent finisher around the rim with both hands and has very good body control at the rim when defenders meet him in the air. Very underrated athlete. He also loves to get to his pull-up jumper, which is set up by his ability to knock down the open three. The Skidmore commit is going to be LOVED by his coaches at the next level.

Wertz does all of the little things on both ends of the floor. He almost never takes more than two or three dribbles with the ball in his hands; instead, he makes quick decisions and always knows what he’s going to do with the rock before it’s swung to him. He can make the open three, he can make pull-up jumpers when the defense overplays him, and he’s a very willing passer. I love the way he attacks closeouts and never wastes any time getting to his spots – these skills will allow him to fit seamlessly into any offense. Defensively, Wertz can guard multiple positions and is a big time athlete.

All I ever hear about Wertz from other coaches is that he’s “sneaky athletic.” No, he’s just athletic, period. The 6-foot-4 wing is an excellent leaper and has phenomenal body control when it comes to finishing at the rim with contact. He’s also a knockdown shooter from three with a great release and beautiful rotation on the ball. He can defend, he will always make the easy pass, and he’ll also do the little things that nobody else wants to do. Wertz should be getting looked at by the highest level D3 schools there are, and I even think he could stretch it to D2. Stop calling his athleticism sneaky!

Wertz, a standout at the NEPSAC Showcase, had a terrific summer while playing with the Middlesex Magic, putting his name on the map as a high level prospect. With good positional size and solid feel for the game, Wertz profiles as a do-it-all wing at the next level. A high-level shooter from behind the arc, Wertz moves well without the ball and quickly explodes into his shot. He’s a fluid mover that can put the ball on the floor for multiple bounces while making good reads. Defensively, he moves well laterally and does a good job of rotating out of the help position. He can guard multiple positions and rebounds by the rim in space. Gyms will certainly be filled with high academic coaches for his games this winter and he should be a standout in the NEPSAC for Governor’s.

Wertz was quite frankly dominant all day. He got by defenders with utter ease and then showcased some really nice elevation at the rim. Definitely an under the radar athlete who has excellent body control at the hoop, even when larger defenders meet him in the air. Wertz can also shoot it well from three and is unselfish with the pass. I could imagine Wertz at the highest level D3 there is, or even at a D2 school somewhere. Very high on Wertz.

Wertz does all of the little things; he rebounds, defends and moves the ball. Excellent finisher at the rim with both hands and has the ability to hit the outside shot as well as the mid range. Just incredibly solid on both ends.

Wertz is a really fundamentally sound player. He’s got great footwork getting into his pull up jumper (which he goes to quite often), and he can use screens and attack closeouts with great feel. He always makes the extra pass, and he rarely fails to make the correct pass/shoot read one he gets into the lane. He’s also a very solid and tough athlete, which allows him to defend against and rebound with players who are a lot bigger than him. He’s just a great player for any team to have, because he can make decisions with or without the ball and is an intelligent and sound basketball player.

As a freshman on varsity will earned his minutes off the bench, with his ability to get big stops on defense. He often guarded the teams best scorer, or ball handler. Will is a very good defender on the outside. He has good lateral quickness, and does a good job beating the offensive player to the spot. I would say Wills best attribute is his defense. Any player who can get stops on defense will earn minutes.
