Here are the 17U all-tournament teams from the Hard Work Region Kick Off:
First Team:
Jackson Niego Jackson Niego 6'0" | PG Lyons Township | 2023 State IL — PG — Chicago Lockdown
Chicago Lockdown was one of the best teams in Iowa this past weekend, as they dominated the competition en route to a 4-0 record. Niego was one of the main reasons why Lockdown was able to find so much success. Playing point guard, Niego did a really great job of getting his teammates opportunities while still being able get his own points. The PG can shoot from outside or the midrange. He is also a capable driver that will take his defender to the rim whenever he can.
Tate Haughenbury Tate Haughenbury 6'5" | PF North Linn | 2023 State IA — F — Iowa Prep Platinum
Haughenbury was relentless this past weekend. Completing most of his work in the paint, the forward was always scrapping for rebounds and attempting to block shots. I was most impressed by how Haughenbury was never discouraged by missed layups. If he ever did miss (which was a rare occurrence), he always fought to get the rebound. Opposing teams simply didn’t have an answer for Haughenbury in the paint at the Hard Work Region Finals.
JP Schilling — PG — Quad City Shockers
Schilling is a true point guard that opposing defenders had a really tough time staying in front of. Schilling did a really good job breaking down defenders using his speed and ball handling skills. Once he penetrated the defense, the PG was able to use his court vision to find open teammates, or his finishing skills to score at the rim. Also skilled as a shooter, Schilling was making defenders look silly all weekend.
Tate Petersen Tate Petersen 6'1" | PG Monticello | 2023 State IA — PG — Iowa Mavs
Petersen is just a solid overall prospect that won’t make too many mistakes. As a true point guard, there is not much more a coach could ask for. Petersen can shoot it well from deep, slash to the rim, and use his passing skills to set up teammates for success. Having a handful of big-time scoring games, Petersen earned himself a spot on the first team. College programs should keep an eye on this sleeper point guard.
Dylan Schmidt Dylan Schmidt 6'4" | SG Johnsburg | 2023 State IL — SG — Chicago Lockdown
One of the best individual performances of the entire weekend belongs to Schmidt. In a blowout win, Schmidt tallied 23 points and was very efficient. In this game, the shooting guard was able to display all of his skills on the offensive end of the court. He finished at the hoop, knocked down outside jumpers, and even did a good job passing the ball. Schmidt proved that he isn’t just a scorer, though. He also showed a knack for tallying steals and snatching rebounds.
Second Team:
Ryan Kenney Ryan Kenney 6'6" | PF Brother Rice | 2023 IL — PF — Chicago Lockdown
Kenney is a physical post prospect that does a great job of using his size to dominate the paint. This past weekend, he rebounded and finished around the rim well.
Ian Mindrup Ian Mindrup 6'3" | PF Linn-Mar | 2023 State IA — PF — Iowa Prep Platinum
Mindrup is a post prospect who showed off his versatility on the block in Iowa. The power forward has an array of moves he can go to and is able to finish with either hand.
Matthew Moore Matthew Moore 6'7" | PF Hillcrest | 2023 State IL — SF — Chicago Lockdown
Moore was a sparkplug for Lockdown at the Hard Work Region Kickoff. Whenever his team was lacking energy or needed a big play, Moore was always there to deliver.
Leirre Collier — SG — Chicago Lockdown
The big moment doesn’t scare Collier. In an overtime game against Illinois Elite, the shooting guard hit a contested step back three as time expired. The SG was no doubt one of the better shooters in the gym this past weekend.
Matthew Watters Matthew Watters 6'2" | SF Central DeWitt | 2023 State IA — SF — Iowa Mavs
Watters is a smart prospect that always makes the right basketball play. He scored an impressive 17 points in a close loss to Chicago Lockdown. I liked how often Watters took his guy off the dribble and attacked the basket.
Third Team:
Jarrod Gee Jarrod Gee 6'5" | PF Perspectives | 2023 State IL — SF — Chicago Lockdown
Colby Dolphin Colby Dolphin 5'10" | PG Kennedy | 2023 State IA — PG — Iowa Prep Platinum
Nick Niego Nick Niego 6'2" | SG Brother Rice | 2023 State IL — SG — Chicago Lockdown
Zane Witt Zane Witt 6'6" | PF Camanche | 2023 State IA — PF — Iowa Mavs
Aaron Trelstad Aaron Trelstad 6'3" | SG Pleasant Valley | 2023 State IA — G — Iowa Mavs
