Continue ReadingAnd just like that, the first round has come and went! That means that we are heading down the final stretch of the season here in Louisiana, and within the next two weeks, we will be crowning 12 brand new state champions. If you read the first round previews, you will have seen that we have hit more than 80% of our predictions. Now I’m not a betting man, but I like those odds. We are going to be continuing those previews and predictions here, moving on to Division IV, which is private school 1A
- Southern Lab vs. 17. Hanson Memorial
Southern Lab was able to just barely squeak by Hanson Memorial by a score of 92-18. This isn’t even the most point that Hanson has given all year, losing even worse to Lafayette Christian (who we will get to later) by a score of 98-32. That is going to be a fun match-up if everything works out as expected.
PHLA Pick: Southern Lab
- Ascension Episcopal vs. 9. St. Martin’s
This was a rematch of a game that was played earlier this season, and it ended up much the same way, with Ascension coming out on top 51-39. There is a possibility that 2018 Eli Mouton will end up as the best player in their next round matchup. But there is also the possibility that Southern Lab will have the best players 2-6 also on the court.
PHLA Pick: Ascension Episcopal
- St. Mary’s vs. 12. Vermilion Catholic
If you would have asked me last week to predict this game, I would have thought that St. Mary’s would have taken it with ease. However, VC was able to get a huge win in the first round, hanging 100 points and winning 100-15. Any time a team wins by 85, it gives me pause. I think that VC is going to come in with confidence and steal a game on the road.
PHLA Pick: Vermillion Catholic
- Houma Christian vs. 13. St. Fredrick
In the previous round, St. Fredrick was just barely able to squeak by Ecole Classique. Houma Christian is in the same district as Ecole, and beat them both times by at least 20. There wasn’t a big difference in the 2nd round as Houma Christian picked up a 25 point win over St. Fredrick 75-50.
PHLA Pick: Houma Christian
- Central Catholic vs. 11. St John
St. John was able to pick up a big win in the opening round against St. Edmund. However, I think this is where their season come to an end. They won’t have anyone to deal with 6’4 F Jalen Johnson, and CC is going to be able to cause a lot of turnovers this game.
PHLA Pick: Central Catholic
- Covenant Christian vs. 10 Westminster
The good news is that this was the closest game so far in Division IV. The bad news is that it was still a 17 point game in Covenant Christian’s favor. Don’t you just love the new split?
PHLA Pick: Covenant Christian
- Lafayette Christian vs. 18. Catholic- Point Coupe
It was good to see Catholic P.C. get the win in the first round over Cedar Creek. It was not so good to see Lafayette Christian get a win in the second round by 93 points, by a score of 123-31. That wasn’t even the biggest win so far these playoffs, with Madison Prep getting a win in 2A by an astounding 102 points. Don’t you just love the new split?
PHLA Pick: Lafayette Christian
