The regular season came to a close Friday with some interesting games and sub-state seedings to follow.

Here is some of the news from around KC:

5A Piper knocks off 4A’s top team:

The biggest event of the evening was Piper upsetting Eudora 58-50. Eudora was ranked #1 in 4A in the final season poll last Tuesday. The upset is interesting, but won’t have much bearing on what happens in the post-season. Eudora still gets the top seed in 4A and will face Louisburg on Wednesday. Eudora’s height with 6-foot-6 forwards [player_tooltip player_id="1212168" first="Jaden" last="Hamm"] and Traeger Rader will be tough for 4A teams to match.

Blue Valley North Peaking:

Blue Valley North might be getting hot at the right time. They beat tough St. James last night 70-69. The Mustangs 13-7 record has them right in the middle of the pack in 6A, and they’ll start with a really tough first-round match with Olathe Northwest. That meeting of 8 and 9 seeds looks to be the best game of the first round. Blue Valley North is led by the veteran guard tandem of [player_tooltip player_id="1131273" first="Kernan" last="Bundy"] and JD Roane, a versatile and athletic pair that combine for about 25 points per game.

Basehor-Linwood finished strong:

Basehor-Linwood wrapped the season 18-2 by flexing it’s muscles in a blowout of Shawnee Heights. The top KC team in the 5A ranks, the Bobcats got the #1 seed in the East, making the West bracket really tough – Kapaun, Topeka West, Hays and Andover Central were all ranked ahead of Basehor-Linwood in the final 5A poll. Basehor-Linwood is stacked with senior guards [player_tooltip player_id="1268786" first="Carter" last="Bergman"] (14 ppg) and [player_tooltip player_id="891910" first="Trevor" last="McBride"] (11.5 ppg) and junior guard [player_tooltip player_id="1080207" first="Tyson" last="Ruud"] (15 ppg).

DeSoto claims #2 seed at 5A sub-state:

DeSoto got by Leavenworth 55-49 and grabbed the second slot at sub-state. The two teams will meet again Tuesday as Leavenworth got the 15th seed. Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id="1270268" first="David" last="Cobin"] has really taken the reigns of the team, but seniors Ethan and [player_tooltip player_id="952449" first="Tyler" last="Schultze"] are solid leaders and producers as well.

Blue Valley Northwest grabs top seed in 6A:

The Huskies finished the season with a couple of wins over highly ranked, albeit smaller classification schools, St. James and Miege. They will kick off sub-state with Shawnee Mission West. Guard [player_tooltip player_id="1378390" first="Grant" last="Stubblefield"] (pictured) leads the way with 19 points per game. He rocketed to #32 in the recent 2023 rankings, and could go higher if the Huskies have a nice postseason. Senior [player_tooltip player_id="946250" first="Avnoor" last="Bhullar"] adds 11.5 points per game and could see a bump from his spot at 93 in the 2022 rankings.

[player_tooltip player_id="891898" first="Aidan" last="Shaw"] leads in scoring:

Stats aren’t completely finalized, but it appears that [player_tooltip player_id="891898" first="Aidan" last="Shaw"] will lead scorers on the Kansas side of the city with 20 points per game. The Mizzou commit will have a tough road ahead as the 11 seed in sub-state.

Bishop Ward forward leads in rebounds:

Daniel Brown, a 6-foot-2 senior at Bishop Ward is leading the Kansas side of the city in rebounds with over 10 per game. His club finished 15-4 and grab an enviable #3 seed in the West Franklin sub-state.

Heritage Christian guard leads in assists:

[player_tooltip player_id="1231202" first="Owen" last="Evans"], a 6-foot-1 junior who has thus far escaped the notice of Prep Hoops rankers, appears to be leading all of Kansas City in assists, with more than 7 per game. His Heritage Christian club is seeded fifth in their sub-state at West Franklin. They will start with a tough Wellsville opponent.
