12:00 pm: 1A #1 Grand View Christian 72, Roland-Story 53

It was only a matter of time before 1A’s top-ranked team Grand View Christian turned on the jets and pulled away, it’s just what they do. And the Thunder did so again on Saturday afternoon, racing past a very good Roland-Story team in the second half en route to a 72-53 win at the Gilbert Basketball Showcase.

Knowing that 7-footer [player_tooltip player_id="956875" first="Daniel" last="Tobiloba"] lurked in the paint, Roland-Story came out with a game plan designed to pull him away from the bucket, using forward [player_tooltip player_id="1239871" first="Luke" last="Patton"] to draw him out, and if he didn’t come out, Patton was content launching 3s. The plan worked for a while for the Norsemen, jumping out to a 12-5 lead midway through the first quarter, but Grand View Christian closed on a 10-2 run and started to grab control of the game midway through the second frame. Despite getting just eight combined points from star guards [player_tooltip player_id="962674" first="Manny" last="Hammonds"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1141465" first="Josh" last="Baucum"] in the first 16 minutes, the Thunder were able to take a 34-29 lead into the break. Role players [player_tooltip player_id="1367400" first="Josh" last="Sanderson"] and Frankie Chiodo combined to score 21 points on 7-13 shooting from behind the arc in the first half to keep the Thunder afloat.

Hammonds started the third quarter hot, getting to the bucket for a finish and knocking down back-to-back 3s to help the Thunder build up a double-digit lead for the first time in the game. Hammonds had 11 in the third quarter to help GVC win the third frame 21-11 and take a comfortable 15-point lead into the final period. They cruised from there, with Tobiloba erasing everything at the back end, and Hammonds and Baucum taking over as scorers down the stretch.

Grand View Christian improves to 17-0 with the win. The Thunder were led by [player_tooltip player_id="962674" first="Manny" last="Hammonds"], who had 20 points. [player_tooltip player_id="1367400" first="Josh" last="Sanderson"] had 17, [player_tooltip player_id="1141465" first="Josh" last="Baucum"] 14, and Frankie Chiodo chipped in 12 points off the bench. [player_tooltip player_id="956875" first="Daniel" last="Tobiloba"] finished with 9 points, 21 rebounds, and 8 blocks in the win.

Roland-Story falls to 12-2 with the loss. The Norsemen were led by [player_tooltip player_id="1367392" first="Isaiah" last="Naylor"], who had 16 points. [player_tooltip player_id="1239871" first="Luke" last="Patton"] added 15.

1:30 pm: Kuemper Catholic 57, Martensdale-St. Marys 44

A dominant 15-3 third quarter helped spur Kuemper Catholic to a 57-44 win over previously undefeated Martensdale-St. Marys on Saturday afternoon at the Gilbert Basketball Showcase.

After an entertaining first half that featured five lead changes, Martensdale-St. Marys took a 27-26 lead into the locker rooms against the bigger, more physical Knights. Kuemper turned up the intensity on the defensive end in the third quarter, holding Martensdale-St. Marys to just 1-9 shooting in the quarter, and forced multiple turnovers. They used that defensive pressure to get out in transition for some easy buckets in the second half. The amped up defense and advantage on the glass on both ends of the floor helped lead the Knights to an impressive non-conference win.

Kuemper Catholic improves to 9-7 with the win. The Knights were led by Isaac Evans, who had 12 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Dennis Vonnahme added 10 points and 7 rebounds. The Knights (unofficially) held a 35-29 edge on the glass, which felt much larger than the numbers indicate.

Martensdale-St. Marys falls to 12-1 with the loss, but games like these, against bigger competition, will do well to prepare the Blue Devils for postseason play. They were led by Chase Boelling, who had a game-high 15 points. [player_tooltip player_id="962666" first="Hogan" last="Franey"] added 10 points and 8 assists in the loss.

3:00 pm: 3A #2 Dallas Center-Grimes 53, Carroll 50

Class 3A’s second-ranked team got all they could handle from a game Carroll team on Saturday afternoon, with Dallas Center-Grimes overcoming a late deficit and escaping with a 53-50 overtime win at the Gilbert Basketball Showcase.

A tight game throughout, neither team led by more than two possessions at any point in the contest. They were tied at 14 after the first quarter, and Carroll took a small 29-26 lead into the break. The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with Dallas Center-Grimes winning the frame 8-6 and trailing by just one heading into the final period.

With 3:19 to play in regulation, [player_tooltip player_id="682288" first="Jacob" last="Runyan"] buried a big 3 from the corner to give the Mustangs their first lead since the first half, 43-41. Carroll answered with four straight to give them a 45-43 lead, and [player_tooltip player_id="1158421" first="Bo" last="Huston"] knocked down a pair of free throws to tie it up at 45. With 1:14 to play, Dallas Center-Grimes held for the final shot. A mid-range jumper from [player_tooltip player_id="682270" first="Cole" last="Glasgow"] clanged off the front of the rim and sent us to overtime.

The teams exchanged the lead a pair of times early in the extra period before a [player_tooltip player_id="682270" first="Cole" last="Glasgow"] 3 gave DCG a 51-49 lead with about 1:45 left. After Evan Hammer split a pair of free throws to trim the lead down to one, Glasgow had a nice driving finish to get the lead back up to 3 with 1:01 to play. [player_tooltip player_id="962631" first="Kaleb" last="Booth"] got a good look to tie it but missed, and the Tigers got a few more chances after DCG missed a pair of front-ends of 1-and-1s, but couldn’t get anything to fall.

Dallas Center-Grimes improves to 9-2 with the win and will take over the #1 spot in the 3A rankings when they are updated on Monday morning. The Mustangs were led by [player_tooltip player_id="682270" first="Cole" last="Glasgow"], who had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the win. [player_tooltip player_id="1172626" first="Jackson" last="Jones"] chipped in 11 points, and [player_tooltip player_id="682288" first="Jacob" last="Runyan"] had 7 points and 7 assists.

Carroll falls to 7-5 with the loss. The Tigers were led by Caden Kock, who had 13 points. [player_tooltip player_id="962631" first="Kaleb" last="Booth"] added 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

4:30 pm: Gilbert 63, Webster City 52

Sometimes what a team needs to get back on track is to step out of conference play and take on an unfamiliar foe. That seemed to be the case for Gilbert on Saturday evening, as the Tigers downed Webster City, 63-52, to close the 2022 Gilbert Basketball Showcase.

Gilbert had lost eight straight games, with the last seven coming against Raccoon River Conference foes, before the win. The Tigers set the tone early, using their superior size and length to dominate the game on the glass on both ends of the floor. Early in the second quarter they were able to double up the Lynx, 20-10. They built the lead as large as 12 in the first half and took a 10-point advantage into the break.

Webster City was able to get the lead down to as little as 4 in the second half but the Lynx were never able to get back to within a single possession. Gilbert did a solid job handling the full-court pressure that Webster City threw on late, getting a few easy transition buckets after breaking the press, and they were able to snap their losing streak.

Gilbert moves to 3-10 with the win. The Tigers were led by [player_tooltip player_id="1235016" first="Justin" last="Terry"], who had a game-high 20 points and 6 rebounds. [player_tooltip player_id="1352893" first="Birk" last="Hanson"] chipped in 11 points and 5 assists, and nine Tigers scored in total.

Webster City falls to 7-6 with the loss. The Lynx were led by [player_tooltip player_id="1367401" first="Jaime" last="Grossoehme"] who scored 18 points on 5-11 shooting from the arc. [player_tooltip player_id="1167725" first="Ty" last="McKinney"] had 14 points and 5 assists, and Jamin Stuhr chipped in 10 points.
