First off, this is a big win for Columbia Heights. Remember, Spencer Alvarez Spencer Alvarez 6'6" | PF Columbia Heights | 2022 MN was to be the five but he is focused on his football career at Minnesota and you can’t blame him for that. Andrew Scoggins has filled in nicely. Hassan Kamara Hassan Kamara 6'4" | SG Columbia Heights | 2022 MN isn’t playing, but Terrence Brown Terrence Brown 6'0" | PG Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN and Muja Burton Muja Burton 6'4" | SF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN have both stepped up to fill the void.
We’ve had Heights labeled as the second ranked team in the state since we started ranking AAA and they’ve lived up to that billing. In fact, this team looks like a viable option as a state title contender. With that said, here is The Rundown!
At the 2:15 mark…. Kyle Johnson Kyle Johnson 6'2" | SG De La Salle | 2022 State MN . Minnesota its your last warning, find Kyle Johnson Kyle Johnson 6'2" | SG De La Salle | 2022 State MN ! If the De senior gets his feet set it’s over. And they are running good stuff for him right now putting the ball on his hands. Had 16 Tuesday night. Took a charge on the night highlight too, he defends. And scored another three on the next highlight.
At the 3:15 mark…. Terrence Brown Terrence Brown 6'0" | PG Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . I love this highlight. Brown catches and instantly notices he has nothing at the moment. But sees he has the DeLaSalle five on him so Brown jab steps left and follows with a fake. The big shifts his weight and Brown darts middle. Brandon Hoban Brandon Hoban 6'2" | SG DeLaSalle | 2022 MN was still in a decent spot but Brown gets the off arm leverage with his left and no ref is going to call that so Brown uses that with a long dribble and the quickness to get middle. Hoban actually did a great job staying with Brown but feeling that, Terrence timed the one hander for a score while Hoban was trying to catch up the half step. Great basketball.
At the 3:55 mark…. Nasir Whitlock Nasir Whitlock 6'2" | PG Delasalle | 2023 State MN . If a hesitation move is needed for a documentary or sample of how to do it, Nasir freezing the defender in transition and getting to the rim. Again, one of the toughest players to defend one on one in space that you will see.
4:15 mark… Isreal Moses. This young man has potential. The ball fake right and explosion for two baseline was impressive. A glimpse into a potential future talent for the Islanders with that move.
4:35 mark… Nasir Whitlock Nasir Whitlock 6'2" | PG Delasalle | 2023 State MN . Love how he confidently steps into this jumper. It looks so clean and effortless, and high quality. Six minutes into the game Nasir was in double figures on five shot attempts.
4:48…. Terrence Brown Terrence Brown 6'0" | PG Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . Love this play from Brown, it’s a basketball play by a person who has spent time in the gym. Brown sees the initial ball handler wants to get rid of the ball. Brown fights to the angle, sees the lazy pass, picks it, goes the other way with a tough And1 finish. You can just feel how big of a momentum play that was.
7:07… Jency Davis Jency Davis 5'9" | PG Columbia Heights | 2024 State MN . This is about the fourth drive from Davis getting deep and feeding a teammate for a score. His quickness gets him places but the biggest thing is the attention he draws after beating defender one. And some of these passes are brilliant, zipped, and in a small window of time but they allow teammates to score comfortably. The very next possession Davis had another great pass. He’s a sophomore lead guard.
8:08… Nasir Whitlock Nasir Whitlock 6'2" | PG Delasalle | 2023 State MN . From the broken record department, Nasir Whitlock Nasir Whitlock 6'2" | PG Delasalle | 2023 State MN ’s pull-up jumper is outstanding. It’s something you can tell he’s worked a lot at because it’s so comfortable, so natural to him. Nasir scored 20 points for the game.
9:35… Donnavin Hinsz Donnavin Hinsz 6'6" | PF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN to Davis to Terrence Brown Terrence Brown 6'0" | PG Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . This had to be one of the biggest plays of the game and based on the crowd, momentum, and immediate Islander timeout, it was. Hinsz with the deflection, Davis with the rapid transition push that allowed the shot to be taken ahead of the defense, and Brown going to the wing where it would be tough to contest and making a huge three.
9:55… Muja Burton Muja Burton 6'4" | SF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . This behind the back step back jumper is eye opening. Good move to get into space. Burton is scoring 26 a game for Columbia Heights and had 21 in this contest.
12:00… Terrence Brown Terrence Brown 6'0" | PG Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . Confidence does amazing things for people. It’s clearly present in the way Brown is playing. Missed a three but the ball was returned, made the three. He’s playing at a high level and part of that is the confidence he has in his game as nobody has spent more time in the gym in their life than Brown. This score gave CH the lead.
12:40… Muja Burton Muja Burton 6'4" | SF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN . The senior seemed to be sprinting the floor and moving behind the play so much from what I am seeing. At least four scores hustling to the rim going unchecked away from the ball. A veteran putting points on the board in whatever way he can. Moments later (on the video), Burton hit a wing three that put the Hylanders up two scores as the game was winding down. This felt like a clutch make.
14:30… Jency Davis Jency Davis 5'9" | PG Columbia Heights | 2024 State MN . Awesome feed to Hinz after once again moving a great percentage of the Islander defense. And Hinsz is doing the job behind the play moving and finishing. But the Jency vision is a big takeaway from this game.
