Captain Shreve vs Homer Game Report

Before the mini Christmas break, the Captain Shreve Gators played the Homer Pelicans in a mid-afternoon, non-tournament tilt at the Swamp. After getting off to a slow start, the Gators gained some separation in the 2nd quarter and moved on to a 59-43 victory. With the end of tournament play coming and district about to begin, each team had players step up and play well. In this game report, we will look at six players who were important to each side during the contest. Captain Shreve Gators Christan Ford The 6’2" senior was the leading scorer against Homer during the contest. While he scored 25 points during the game to lead all scorers, it was how he scored his points that was probably most impressive. Ford showed the ability to attack the rim and score at the basket on layups. He also displayed that he could be a threat on catch and shoot situations by making three point looks. Going forward, if he can keep defenses off balance as he did against Homer, he will be a big threat for the Gators going forward. [player_tooltip player_id="1127252" first="Kyron" last="Reed"] Reed has had a lot placed on his shoulders as the Gator point guard. He has had so much pressure, we almost forget that he is one of the better shooters in northwest Louisiana. During Homer, he reminded onlookers of that fact. Reed nailed five threes as he helped push the Shreve lead to double digits before the half. He can spot up from all parts of the floor and make open jumpers. While he is improving as point, he is a shooter teams cannot leave open. [player_tooltip player_id="1271043" first="Davion" last="Coleman"] Coleman did not have a big game in reference to scoring. However, his skill set was on full display during the contest. Coleman took guards and forwards off the dribble or used his strength and height to get to his spots on the floor. His mid-range jumper and his rebounding made him a matchup problem for the Pelicans. Continuing to play in this manner will cause him to be a mismatch for other teams as he was for Homer. [player_tooltip player_id="1347460" first="Marcus" last="Lofton"] The freshman guard showed two very important things during the game against Homer. The first one was that he can be a contributor as a freshman. He had two steals (scoring on one of them) and played solid man-to-man and zone defense. The second was that he can be a serviceable ballhandler on the varsity level. For a team with only one real ballhandler, Lofton showing that he can handle on the varsity level will only give him more playing time going forward. Homer Pelicans [player_tooltip player_id="1270246" first="Takeviuntae" last="Kidd"] The state championship winning quarterback is not a bad point guard either. The lefty guard is good at creating ball pressure while he is defending and disrupts ballhandlers enough to make mistakes. Offensively, Kidd made open jumpers against the Shreve defenders and was good at getting to the paint and drawing defenders. His 17 points were products of the way he played against the Gators and will be a blueprint to his success going forward. [player_tooltip player_id="1270245" first="D’Anthony" last="Kimble"] To be honest, there were a couple of times during the game when he was the best offensive player on the floor. He had the best all-around game with his rebounding and scoring from the perimeter. On one possession, Kimble dribbled into a three point bomb using a crossover behind the back dribble move that created space and left the defender in their tracks. He played both ends of the floor well. Despite the loss, Kimble displayed during his 19 point game that he is as good as they get on the hardwood. Look for both teams to be active going into New Years’ week. Shreve will play in the Doc Edwards tournament while Homer will play 4A (Evangel) and 5A (Natchitoches Central) schools to finish out 2021.
