Conference Commentary
Top Ten: Annandale, Rockford
With three starters back from an 18-2 state tournament team, and the majority of the team being seniors, the Cards are a top five team in Class AA basketball. Three all league players return with seniors ready to step into open spots making which should be a big and tough veteran line-up.
Rockford is also a top ten level team in Class AA and will also be a team of veterans. They have three of their top scorers back and their line-up should have solid size, talent, and experience. Two all league players back.
Top Ten Potential: Glencoe-Silver Lake
It’s not often you have a team like GSL that losses four of their top five scorers from a 9-5 league team and you think they might be even better. But it’s very possible with Mitchel Jaskowiak Mitchel Jaskowiak 6'4" | PF Glencoe-Silver Lake | 2022 State MN being this league’s top scorer and toughest player plus three really good guards returning with him.
Compete with Most: Litchfield, Watertown-Mayer, New London-Spicer
The Dragons underwent some changes with a new section and the top scoring options graduating. A handful of role players return so Litch will still be in every game they likely play but it will take some time for them to adjust to roles. My expectations for Watertown-Mayer are pretty high. They have six of their top eight back with John Mueller John Mueller 6'5" | SF Watertown-Mayer | 2023 State MN being a high school star level player that should keep them in the upper half of the league for the next couple seasons. New London-Spicer is a bit of a tough team to figure. They certainly have a guy to build around in Brycen Christensen Brycen Christensen 6'1" | SF New London-Spicer | 2023 State MN and the backcourt should be strong, but they have a number of starters to replace from a 4-win league team plus they aren’t very big.
Rebuilding: Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Dassel-Cokato
HLWW lost nine seniors most of which played. They have a really good post in Drew Burau Drew Burau 6'4" Howard Lake Waverly-Winsted | 2022 MN but so much needs to be replaced around him from a team that was 7-10. Guards really have to step up early despite being inexperienced. DC wasn’t very talented last season and they lost three starters from a team that was winless in league play. Eli Gillman will play football at Montana and they need him this year if they are to win some games.
