This past Saturday afternoon, Del City hosted a strong session anchored by Choctaw, McAlester, Millwood and of course Del City themselves. This grouping of teams brought an interesting look at prospects from all age groups and all future college levels.
Adante Holiman Adante Holiman 6'0" | PG McAlester | 2022 State #224 Nation OK , 5’11 Guard, McAlester, Class of 2022
Scoring. That’s what Holiman does, and it’s a big reason why Holiman is headed to UT Rio Grand Valley next year. On Saturday he showed his usual deep range from three, while also looking to continue to refine his explosiveness and suddenness off the bounce. While he made some plays in transition, he did spend time in the halfcourt as an off the ball threat, which was a good way to showcase his scoring talents.
Watching Holiman with his high school team is always tough for his longterm evaluation. He draws a crowd and focus as the main threat. Which can lead to him driving into traffic and forcing bad shots or committing turnovers. But it’s a bit of a “chicken or the egg” type conundrum. Holiman has to carry an outsized load for the squad, so that increased usage is a factor in turnovers and other bad results. Scoring is a given for Holiman this winter, but it’ll be interesting to see how he helps elevates his team, as that will be a good step forward in his development.
Robert Gambill Robert Gambill 6'6" | SF Choctaw | 2022 OK , 6’6 Forward, Choctaw, Class of 2022
The small college ranks are filled with grinders like this Choctaw Yellowjacket senior. The senior forward understands his role as a glue guy and embraces it with his hardworking ways. To go along with his blue collar ways around the hoop, Gambill can step out and hit threes as a spot up threat. With his willingness to work, it makes sense that Gambill has offers from various small colleges to extend his basketball career.
Damarious Vealy, 5’8 Guard, Del City, Class of 2023
With the graduation of many senior standouts, Vealy will have a bigger role and need to be a consistent producer this season. So far in scrimmages this smaller lead guard is looking to be the QB for Eagles. He was part of good movement in transition and in the halfcourt for the unselfish team. While Vealy has some dynamism to his game with the ability to get into the lane, his ability to hit threes will be one of his most vital traits for the Eagles. This winter, Vealey has a chance to go from a sparkplug for the Eagles, to the backcourt engine that keeps Del City on the road to another Gold Ball.
Percy Green, 6’3 Wing, Del City, Class of 2023
While the other names in the talented Eagles junior class might be more popular, Green will be an important part of their Gold Ball chasing this winter. With a big wingspan, he adds to their formidable size and operated as a Swiss Arm Knife type.
Green was active on defense and part of their good ball movement on the offensive end. Also importantly, he knocked down multiple threes. His shooting form was a little funky but for Saturday he was a consistent threat. He has the look of a prospect that’s still growing into his long and lanky frame. Which means he could just now be tapping the surface of his potential.
William Mays, 6’0 Guard, Millwood, Class of 2023
Mays’ shot and scoring wasn’t in sync on Saturday, but it was impressive to see this budding floor general still find ways to impact the game for his squad. His quickness allowed him to get to the rim and make the defense collapse, which gave him distribution opportunities. To go along with passing off drives, he was strong at creating fast break chances with his head always up and pushing the tempo. Mix in some good defensive instincts and disruptive play and there’s a good formula for Mays to break out as one of the better players in OKC this winter.
Isaiah Taylor, 6’4 Forward, Choctaw, Class of 2024
A name to keep an eye on in the rising sophomore class in Oklahoma is this burly forward for the Yellowjackets. At 6’4 he plays bigger than his size thanks to a strong frame, which makes an effective player around the basket. He also showed some ability to attack off the dribble as a face up 4 type while also hitting a corner three against Del City. Taylor has the traits and raw tools to potentially transition to a more perimeter based game.
