This matchup started off as a sound defensive game from the tip, both teams rotated well and locking in defensively. Low scoring game with a score of 12 to 10 Wheeling’s, way early with just under 6 minutes to go in the first half.
Julian Villegas got going once again being a true floor general and playing with a great level of toughness tallying 12 points in the first half.
Tempo picked up in the second half offensively as both teams main guys got rolling. Jack Kendrick was a physical force all game for Walter Payton. Causing havoc in the paint on the offensive end and being a large body that can move defensively.
A very competitive matchup that came down to the wire as the score was tied at 41 a piece with 2 minutes left to go. Wheeling was able to pull away late and win the game by a margin of four points. Aimia Igiehon had another huge game for the Wildcats as Elijah Hutchison aided with defensive effort and being a point guard setting up others.
Court 2: Lakers (88) vs Walter Payton Varsity 2 (85)
This barn scorcher matchup was up pace and teams were on fire early especially for the Lakers as they put up 54 points in the first half alone. Noah Kyrychenko for the Lakers was a major contributor putting up 24 points in the first half alone.
Walter Payton found themselves down by a margin of 21 going into the second half. They were able to fight back due to major efforts from Nate Raub, who poured in 37 points, hitting 7 threes on the day.
Despite a huge rally by Walter Payton the Lakers were able to hold on to put this one away!
3:00 Games
Court 1: Wheeling (70) vs Walter Payton Varsity 2 (50) –
Wheeling came out early in this matchup lead behind the efforts of Aima Igehion, who tallied 18 points in the first half of this matchup. Payton found difficulty on the defensive end of the floor especially when it came to containing dribble penetration.
On the offensive end Walter Payton struggled in this contest and could not get in a consistent rhythm with their production. On the flip Wheeling was able to score multiple ways mostly due to Elijah Hutchinson of Wheeling getting to the paint with relentless aggression and making plays for others as well as himself.
Wheeling was able to maintain their controlling lead until the final buzzer.
Court 2: Walter Payton Varsity 1 (93) vs Lakers (64)
Walter Payton came out in this one playing the game the right way. Really making substantial efforts on the defensive end of the floor, rotating, and forcing the Lakers into taking awful shots.
Payton’s trio of Jack Kendrick, Julian Villegas, and Josef Heidkamp led the way in this one combining for 59 total points in this one. Played with incredible efficiency throughout the game that clearly frustrated the Lakers.
Deerfield High School’s Jacob Cohn, whom is the lead guard for the Lakers had an impressive day! Cohn was able to finish the day with 15 points in this matchup and it was a fun battle to watch between himself and opposing guard Villegas.
Lakers look to bounce back next week, as Payton hopes to keep the ball rolling.
4:00 Games
Court 1: Vernon Hills JV (42) vs Hampshire JV (54)
A great matchup that felt a lot closer than the score portrayed. Two very similar teams with similar skill sets, however Vernon Hills was missing the athleticism that Hampshire possesses.
Vernon Hills’ zone was able to slow the game and negate the athletic margin between the two teams. Even with Vernon Hills’ zone having the ability to pile on stops, Hampshire was quick enough to get back and play excellent transition defense which in turn lead to easy points for them on the opposing end.
Overall a fun game to watch with two key players going at it head-to-head in Hampshire’s Nick Louis (19 points) and Vernon Hills’ Bryce Drexler (24 points).
Court 2: Ida Crown JV (55) vs Walter Payton JV (43)
Ida Crown’s JV team consist of players with legitimate talent and athleticism. Ida’s Jacob Wortman has been a player in our league with a solid 18-point performance in this one followed by Avi Okner’s 15-points.
Ida Crown played strong together, really hammering home team basketball and showing high levels of chemistry. Walter Payton was in this matchup but could not close the gap in the end. Payton’s Kai Fogelson continued to be another impressive prospect in this league tallying 27-points out of his teams 43 total points.
In conclusion Ida Crown ended up getting the job done from utilizing teammates and giving multiple efforts on both ends of the floor.
5:00 Games
Court 1: Hampshire (50) vs Ida Crown JV (44)
Hampshire was in total control of this one despite it being a close matchup. Offense was not firing on a all cylinders in this matchup for either team, but the defense was intense especially for Hampshire who came up victorious in this matchup.
Whenever the game got close Hampshire was able to pile on stops which led to them ultimately closing this game out down the line. A highly competitive game where both teams got after it and left it on the floor.
Court 2: Walter Payton JV (53) vs Bucks (54)
The Bucks continue to get better week after week! A very solid game from two deserving teams in this competition. The Bucks were led by the efforts of Ryan Brown who led all scorers with 25 points.
Bucks were up early playing well, but it was not enough to keep Walter Payton down for long! Walter Payton was able to battle back and gain the lead in this one. Walter Payton’s Quentin Desanto lead the rally for his team dropping 24 points.
A game that came down to defense, taking care of the ball and making free throws which all three things the Bucks were able to execute down the stretch.
6:00 Games
Court 1: Vernon Hills (93) vs Ida Crown 1 (63)
Vernon Hills returned this weekend ready to play! Vernon Hills looks in mid-season condition already, the ball is really moving well and are producing as a team on both ends of the floor.
Ida Crown 1, who has been playing well just was not able to keep up in this matchup. Struggled to find a rhythm in this one, had too many turnovers which fueled Vernon Hills offense allowing them to get out in transition. In the end, Ida Crown just had far fewer possessions than Vernon Hills and never stood a fair chance in this one.
Court 2: Leyden (57) vs Ida Crown 2 (38)
Leyden pulled away in the second half, playing with tons of energy. John Okner had an excellent first half, with an impressive in game dunk through traffic. Jonathan Ayala had another huge game for Leyden High School really playing well on the defensive end of the floor while at the same time being a reliable scoring option.
Close score for most of the competition and remained extremely competitive until the end. Leyden’s ability to hit the three was a key separator in this one as they were able to build their lead in the second half and win this matchup after being down early.
7:00 Games
Court 1: Elk Grove (91) vs Ida Crown 1 (47)
Elk Grove was in control early, too much fire power for Ida Crown to handle. Threes were pouring in all game long for Elk Grove and when they missed Bartek Sarat was there to grab boards and clean it up. Elk Grove once again dominated the transition battle which allowed them to have such a substantial lead in this matchup early in the competition in which they held on to.
Court 2: Leyden (67) vs Bulls (60)
Leyden found themselves down for most of the matchup until 5 minutes to go in the second half when they ended up taking a 2-point lead making it 51 to 53. Team play sparked this comeback as they started getting it done on the defensive end and getting stops and playing together on offense creating scoring opportunities for each other.
Junior Forward Andrew Mann went on a scoring tear late in this one, getting out in transition with more than a few coast-to-coast baskets navigating through traffic. A player to track in the West Suburban Gold conference this year as he is bound to have some major games.
The Bulls hit a wall and got stuck only scoring 9 points in the final five minutes of play, due to a high volume of turnovers that allowed Leyden to put this one away down the stretch.
8:00 Games
Court 1: Vernon Hills (82) vs Ida Crown 2 (43)
This game was decided early due to the dominating play of Vernon Hills. Vernon Hills’ big three Milan Raval, Justin St. Louis and Erik Remus ended up being too much for Ida Crown to handle.
Vernon Hills was able to dominate the game defensively due to the play of Erik Remus (6’4” F/C) on the defensive end of the court. Remus was clogging up the middle, limiting middle drives to the basket and controlling the boards. Impressive showing for the big man in his fall league debut!
Vernon Hills has versatility on their roster and will be competitive and fun to watch in this upcoming season.
Court 2: Elk Grove 86 vs Bulls 70
Bulls started off strong but could not maintain their play for the duration of the competition. An offensive show early as both teams started off hot, making tough shots and playing with incredible efficiency. Elk Grove’s Junior forward Bartek Sarat is emerging as a player for this Elk Grove team, really showing he can play with great physicality and be a reliable option for his team down the stretch.
Elk Grove pulled away in the second half winning by multiple digits after being up three going into halftime. The Bulls couldn’t keep the momentum going despite having valiant efforts from multiple players on both ends of the court. Elk Groves shot making and ability to get consecutive stops was the key separator as this game wined down to the final buzzer.
Player Standouts:
John Okner 6’7” F Ida Crown 2022
Okner has continued to impress week in and week out. Okner has shown multiple areas of his game that displays he can play at the next level. Okner was scoring effectively from the dunker and the low block while also mixing in some threes and one dribble pull up jump shots as well!
Okner put up 20 points against a solid Vernon Hills club with a physical big as his matchup while mixing in some rebounds and block shots. An interesting prospect with room to grow and further his game.
Nick Louis 5’9” G Hampshire High School 2024
Consistent great showings getting the job done for his squad fulfilling multiple roles. A highly competitive guard that was able to penetrate the gaps against a strong defensive Vernon Hills JV team and be a scoring outlet for his team. While also having the ability to be a playmaker and get other guys involved by getting downhill and making solid decisions.
Continues to be a fun player to watch!
Nate Raub 6’5” F Walter Payton College Prep 2023
Big game from the junior forward Nate Raub who poured in 37 points vs the Lakers in a great week 3 matchup. Raub showcased the ability to completely dominate a game with his skill set. At 6’5” being able to handle the ball through traffic coast to coast and make terrific decisions, while having the ability to finish as well is big time.
A huge eye opener was the fact that this wing made 7 threes that barely even touched the rim during this competition.
A small college prospect with a high ceiling!
Noah Kyrychenko 6’3” G/F Lake Zurich High School 2022
Kyrychenko had 32 in a thrilling offensive game vs Walter Payton, a scorer that plays with great confidence. Standing at 6’3” Kyrchenko is showing the skill set that translates to the modern day off guard.
Really does well spacing the floor with his shooting ability and finding different ways to hunt down his shot opportunities. A player that can really fill it up quick and consistently, prospect to track this upcoming season.
Bronson Bartuch 5’7” PG Elk Grove High School 2023
Bartuch is our league’s leading scorer averaging around 33 points a game. This offensive packed guard put up a 40 Point game, hitting 8 threes in the process. A player with tons of flare yet is extremely efficient at the same time.
A player is primed to have a breakout Junior season!
Julian Villegas 5’11” G Walter Peyton College Prep 2022
Villegas is another impressive piece to this Peyton team. A strong player that can swing either guard spot to be effective. Very smooth with the ball in hands and gets to the rim with relative ease.
Showed ability to get into the paint when every he wanted and displayed ability to make great decisions consistently. His play allowed his teammates to max out their abilities on the offensive end of the floor, by making the game simple for those around him.
A player to keep an eye on moving forward.
Ryan Brown Bucks 6’3” F 2024
Brown has been a major player for the Bucks and has been a key part of their succuss as of late! Possess great length, which allows him to finish around the basket with either hand, as he is an aggressive player working to get to the rim repeatedly.
Although Brown Is efficient around the rim, he showed the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. A solid player that has emerged as a reliable scorer for the Bucks.
Erik Rimus 6’4” F/C Vernon Hills High School 2022
A new face in our league missing the first few weeks of competition had a strong debut. Very powerful small ball 5 with the ability to play some 4 due to his shooting ability. Besides his offense Rimus showed ability to move laterally with his feet and guard the paint effectively.
Rimus is an athlete that moves well and show room for growth to become a more well-rounded player down the line!
Bartek Sarat 6’3” F Elk Grove High School 2023
A player that plays with a quite skill set but is extremely effective from the floor. Does not stand out in any one area in terms of skill set. Sarat possess solid overall skill and can shoot it, handle the ball, and plays with great feel.
Has good touch around the basket and stays active on both ends of the floor. His activity level always seems to have him in the right spot at the right time. A player to like moving forward and to track as our league continues to progress.

Ida Crown 2 who is usually led by their big man Jonathan Okner (20 points), really struggled making shots against the Bulls Zone defense. An up-tempo game from the tip that the Bulls were able to take and maintain control of until the final buzzer!
Court 2: Ida Crown 1 (47) vs Vernon Hills High School (53)
A low scoring game for Vernon Hills High School due in large part to the defense of Ida Crown. Ida Crown made great efforts to limit Vernon Hills scoring opportunities early by controlling the pace of this game as Vernon Hills has been known to get out and run-in transition.
Even with the combination of pace and defense being in Ida Crowns favor Vernon Hills was still able to edge this one out.
6:00 PM Games
Court 1: Elk Grove (75) vs Leyden (59)
Elk grove lead by Bartuch, just had too much fire power for Leyden to handle. Elk Grove possess one of the most prolific offenses in our league getting it done from a team perspective. Very intricate team chemistry that carries both on and off the court which usually is one of Leyden’s strengths as well.
Leyden just could not get it done defensively and could not get to the point where they could tally multiple stops. Big game from Elk Grove moving strong into the final week of play as they prepare for playoffs.
Court 2: Wheeling (72) vs Loyola (50)
Wheeling was in control as Loyola had no answer for Elijah Hutchinson who has been playing like a first team all-conference player. Loyola who won the initial matchup between these two clubs, fell short in this evening’s competition.
Wheeling has improved greatly since the first matchup as they have multiple players playing with confidence, and their defense is suffocating led by the efforts of Aima Igiehon.
Loyola looks to bounce back next week!

The Bucks have been improving each week but hit a wall in this matchup that took them back to week 1. Hampshire is an aggressive team that really gets after it on both ends of the court! Bucks look to bounce back as Hampshire is primed for a tough rematch vs Vernon Hills this upcoming weekend!
Court 2: Ida Crown JV (59) vs Vernon Hills JV (72)
Vernon Hills was able to take control of this one behind the play of Bryce Drexler. The showtime guard went on a scoring tear of 34 points vs a competitive Ida Crown team. Drexler’s scoring tear made it challenging for Ida Crown to rally back in this one.
Drexler was able to hit key shots to keep Ida Crown at bay which sealed the deal as time expired.
8:00 PM Games
Court 1: Hampshire JV vs Vernon Hills JV
Game Rescheduled to be played 10/17
Court 2: Wheeling (70) vs Lakers (69)
A slow start to this game as both teams came out with middling energy. However, as competition continued the game started to pick up immensely, particularly in the second half.
What was a twelve-point lead at a half for wheeling ended up turning into one point lead for the Lakers! The stellar play behind Senior Noah Kyrychenko’s 42-point performance took the Lakers phenomenal comeback all the way to the final possession before the team missed the final shot at the buzzer to seal the victory!
Game of the night, as we hope to see a rematch in playoffs!
Player Standouts:
Noah Kyrchenko 6’3” G/F Lakers 2022
Kyrchenko is a legitimate scorer in the class of 2022, a player who is showing every reason why he should play at the next level. Kyrchenko has been scoring the ball relentlessly due to his athleticism, finishing ability and legitimate ability to shoot the ball.
A true shot maker that can defend as well, Krychenko has been a true eye opener as he is displaying the ability to play with the best of them! One area of his game he still needs to work on is his decision making, but it is not a major area of concern.
Michael Crimmins 6’0” G Lakers 2023
This Junior guard was playing with the ultimate confidence today in route to a 27-point performance vs Ida Crown Jewish Academy. Crimmins was effective from the field showing the ability to make an array of shots, finishing at the rim or on the perimeter.
A knock down shooter who you can’t give an ounce of space to, or he will let it fly and sink the shot. Crimmins knocked down 5 threes in this competition and he has shown ability to knock down shots consistently.
Elijah Hutchinson 6’3” G/F Wheeling High School 2022
An up-and-coming player in the class of 2022! A legitimate 6’3” Guard with the long wiry athletic frame college coaches love to see from guards today. Hutchinson is a pure athlete with a solid handle on the ball to push in transition and make plays in the half court.
A very crafty player that has touch around the basket with acrobatic finishes yet can get up and dunk in traffic as he had three of those dunks in tonight’s competition. A player that plays with great energy and takes pride in his defense it’s hard to find a reason not to want to coach a player with his ability and mindset.
A name to track as the tip of the upcoming high school season is approaching.
Rory Robbins 5’8” G Bulls 2023
A small crafty guard that plays with high level efficiency! Robbins was able to penetrate the opposing team all game long getting to spots where he can throw up a nice touch shot which was falling for him all game.
Robbins also shot the ball extremely well which is critical for a player of his stature as it allowed defenders to press up on him and tag him early in transition which opened the floor up.
A consistent scorer for this Bulls team and is a small guard that packs a lot of punch. Shows ability to be a solid lead guard down the line.
Julian Marta 5’9” G Bulls 2024
A promising small school prospect in the class of 2024. An elite guard with high IQ for the game, that plays with a high level of competitiveness. Marta is a fun player to watch as he handles the ball well and is shifty when other defenders press up on him or attempt to put him in trapping situations. Marta shows ability to defend on the perimeter extremely well and to be a leader for his team on the floor. A true lead guard with the ability to shoot the ball, should be a key player for Glenbrook North High School down the line as he has room to continue to get better down the line as he is currently a sophomore.Definitely one of the prospects in the North Suburbs to track.
