The 2022 class is deep with talent all around, and that is no exception in the guard department. These seven guards all head into their senior years a bit more under-the-radar than some other prospects, but have proven to be worth a look from college coaches.

[player_tooltip player_id="958752" first="Gedeon" last="Musabyimana"] (6’1 2022 PG, St. Paul Central)- Last season’s floor general for a solid St. Paul Central team, Gedeon is a hard working player who simply wants to get better and win games. He has a bit more length to him than his height suggests, and uses that to his advantage as an on-ball defender with the ability to poke the ball free from opposing guards. With the ball in his hands he has a solid feel for the game, and can make plays as both a facilitator and scorer in pick & roll situations. He adds in some range beyond the arc and has been working this offseason to improve his explosiveness. After averaging 14.7 points and 4.2 assists last year for a team that graduated a lot, Gedeon will carry a big workload as a senior.

[player_tooltip player_id="958736" first="Carson" last="Kolles"] (5’10 2022 PG, Monticello)- I had the chance to see Carson lead Monticello to an upset over St. Francis in the playoffs last season, and then again this spring/summer as he went at some talented opponents with Northstar Titans. Not the tallest guy on the court but has some strength to him and is fearless going at size around the rim. Carson changes speeds well and has a quick burst attacking the basket. Once in the paint he can come to a quick stop on two feet and get guys in the air with a quick shot fake, or he has the strength to go into contact and withstand his balance to finish. Kolles also poises a threat as a drive-and-dish guy as he’s able to make quick decisions when his angle to the rim is cut off, and he can then locate the open shooter to deliver an accurate pass right to the hands.

[player_tooltip player_id="958658" first="Tyrell" last="Sappington"] (5’10 2022 PG, Hopkins)- I’m interested to see how Tyrell performs this year for Hopkins. As a sophomore he had some strong performances at the JV level, and last year as a junior he saw some minutes off the varsity bench as an energizer. Defensively he has the potential to be a difference maker as he can get under guys and use his quickness to disrupt opposing ball handlers. Even with limited minutes last year, he was someone that could be relied upon to come in and pick up a steal or draw a charge. Outside of that defensive effort he’s a quick ball handler who knows when to attack a bad closeout and get to the basket. Crafty finisher for his size but also has the vision to make the smart pass when he’s not able to get a good look around the rim.

Jay Nyamari (6’1 2022 G, Anoka)- As a team Anoka couldn’t get much going last season, but the return of Jay Nyamari is a bright spot for them. He was an 11.5 ppg scorer as a junior, and this past summer we saw him will his Minnesota Heat team to a near upset over D1MN Prospects. A guy who can really put points on the board in a hurry, Jay has some wiggle to him off the dribble. Able to shift defenders with a smooth crossover, Jay finds success attacking the basket and using his long arms to finish, or creating a little space for a pull-up jumper from three or mid-range. I like the intensity that he brought to the floor this summer as someone who isn’t afraid to go up against anyone, and has the confidence to make big plays on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="958725" first="Ty" last="Creger"] (6’ 2022 PG, Owatonna)- Tyrel Creger put together some strong performances as a junior including a 20 point game against a talented Lakeville South team, and he looks ready to lead Owatonna to a lot of wins this upcoming winter. He plays with a lot of poise and change of pace that allows him to pick his spots and get to them off the dribble. Tyrel possesses a smooth jumper that he hits at a high rate from both mid-range and three, and he scores so efficiently because of his smart shot selection. He doesn’t rely just on scoring though as he can excel in the role of facilitator, hitting his shooters right in the hands and delivering accurate entry passes to his bigs. Should be in for a productive senior campaign.

[player_tooltip player_id="796949" first="Ryan" last="Warren"] (6’3 2022 SG, Benilde-St. Margaret’s)- Ryan has transferred to BSM and looks ready to play a strong role for deep team. He’s a major threat in transition on both ends of the floor, as he has excellent timing on chase-down blocks, and also has the explosiveness to finish above the rim with ease on the other end. At around 6’3 he has good size and some strength at the 2, which allows him to get into the paint and bump some guys around with his physicality. Leave him open from three and he poses a threat to knock down shots with his lefty stroke. From what I saw during the AAU season he puts in a lot of effort defensively picking up deep and guarding the length of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="958768" first="Vlad" last="Ciubotaru"] (6’ 2022 G, Minnetonka)- A sharpshooting guard who managed to standout amongst a talented backcourt group at Minnetonka last season, he’ll look to help his team improve upon their 6-12 record from last season. When he’s not knocking down threes, he has impressive passing vision that allows him to create easy looks out of what appears to be nothing. Because of this he’s dangerous in the pick & roll because if a defender goes under he can stop and pop from three, but if the shot isn’t there he’s able to find gaps and hit his roller to the rim. Also a strong rebounder for someone his size, he scraps on the defensive glass and then takes off to get transition looks the other way.
