Here are some Western Kansas bigs to watch as we transition to school ball:
Sean Anderson, 6-foot-3 forward, 2023, Norton HS:
The Bluejays return 6-foot-7 Nolan Juenemann, who will dominate on the front line. But the long rising-junior Anderson will be a big presence in the lineup, who should build upon his 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds he turned in last year.
Carter Gooden, 6-foot-3 forward, 2022, Scott HS:
Goodson is not a newcomer to the Scott lineup. As a junior he was a force on the glass with 5.5 rebounds. The Beavers return most of their production from last year. But now Gooden will need to take a step forward to lead a young team, building on his 4.9 points per game a year ago.
Cade Mecklenburg, 6-foot-4 forward, 2022, Hugoton HS:
The Eagles graduate a great group of seniors who went to state last year. Ryle Riddlesperger Ryle Riddlesperger 6'2" | PG Hugoton | 2023 State KS is the top returner, but he will need a lot of help to fill the void from graduation. Mecklenburg got great experience last year and provided 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds. He can help the Eagles by adding to those totals.
Seth Schwien, 6-foot-2 forward, 2024, Victoria HS:
The Knights lose a ton of production from a good senior class. They played some young players last year, particularly Schwien, who produced 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds as a freshman. The door is open now for him to play a much bigger role.
Jace Steinmetz Jace Steinmetz 6'3" | SF Garden City | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-3 forward, 2023, Garden City HS (pictured):
The big schools will have some opportunities for more playing time. At Garden City, Steinmetz looks ready to make an name for himself on the varsity. He has scorched the nets for his club team this summer, and at 6-foot-3, he can play a diverse roles. He could be considered a shooting guard, but he can also play the wing, bang inside and defend a variety of spots.
