While his game doesn’t have a lot of flash or razzle-dazzle, Tatkenhorst says he focuses on the fundaments and tries to play smart.
“I’m usually not the fastest or the tallest but I’m able to make up for it by playing smart,” he said. “I also shoot the ball pretty well and I take pride in playing great defense. My teammates and I are all very unselfish and share the ball very well as we all like to see each other do great.”
Tatkenhorst spent the offseason playing with his high school team as well as on the Mokan Select team and says the experience helped prepare him for his senior season.
“My main goal this summer was to get ready for the upcoming season,” he said. “I also shot a lot which has definitely paid off so far this season.”
That work has paid off as Basehor-Linwood is off to a strong start this season with its only losses coming to Topeka Hayden by two and Hogan Prep by six.
“Our two losses have come to two good teams in close games which we feel like we could have won,” Tatkenhorst said. “As a team we need to figure out how to win these close games in the future. Our teammates are very good and we all trust each other when we play. We play very well together and feel like if we continue to play together and get better we have a great shot to win league and go to state.”
A fan of Dirk Nowitzki, Tatkenhorst says his dad has been the biggest influence on his basketball career.
“He is the one who started coaching us when we were little and has continued to help still today,” Tatkenhorst said.
Tatkenhorst has drawn interest from several schools and says Simpson College has shown the most interest, but plans to wait until after the season to make a decision.
