After the first day I would say that mission was more than accomplished. Here are five players that stood out on day one. I’ll be providing coverage all week.
Evan Solomon Evan Solomon 6'3" | PG Charlevoix | 2022 State MI 6-3 2022 Charlevoix Just as he did at the Lake Superior St Elite camp. Solomon continued to show his elite perimeter footwork. This allows him to both get to his shot off and get to his spots easily without elite athleticism. In the the five on five portion of the camp he showed to other aspect of his game that makes him an appealing prospect. Has more than enough ball handling and passing ability to toggle between the 1 and 2 positions. Already holding some small college offers his recruitment could pick up this summer as he continues to play with the Grand Rapids Storm.
Sam Leppien Sam Leppien 6'10" | C Alma | 2022 State MI 6-10 2022 Alma By far the tallest player in the camp and used his size to assert himself. Rebounded well and carved out space down low without fouling. Appeared to be playing with a slight leg injury. Hopefully that is not an issue going forward. He is far from finished product. But has come a long way in short period of time with a pandemic in the middle of it all. He knows who he is. He’s not going to venture out on the perimeter. A patient coach who wants an old school big man should be intrigued by this improving prospect. After bouncing around a little in AAU seems to have found a home with a good B3 Athletics squad.
Gavin Bisballe 6-5 2022 Lake City (pictured at top of article) The other four players on this list are rather known commodities. This young man is a true sleeper. After not playing AAU and his team having a very COVID impacted season he simply hasn’t been on the court a lot. That is starting to change. He will be playing with Parallel 45 for the rest of the summer after playing well at the Cadillac Summer Shootout. He is an athletic and bouncy swing man who can get hot from behind the arc. He did so on Tuesday hitting three in a row from deep. Athletic enough to make plays well above the rim. That explosion is a recent development in his game. Next step will be increased strength and consistency on both ends of the court. Has good bloodlines as his sister was a standout who now plays at Grand Valley. I think he could be a real late bloomer and a steal for a program willing to take a chance.
Luke Hazelton Luke Hazelton 6'7" | PF Glen Lake | 2023 State MI 6-6 2023 Glen Lake Younger brother of Ferris St forward Reece Hazelton Reece Hazelton 6'7" | SF Glen Lake | 2020 State MI . I only mention that to highlight the fact that he is a much different player. Once you get past that “Loyer” brother syndrome you are left with a very intriguing prospect. The prototype of a small college stretch four. Not going to blow you away athletically but very skilled and does just about everything well. I have even seen him running the point for his P45 16U squad in the spring. Can hit the three and can penetrate if he is ran off the line. Has a soft touch and finishes well around the rim with both hands. Does this without the benefit of explosive lift. Helps that he is left handed. I think he is in line for a huge statistical junior campaign.
Jaden Montague Jaden Montague 6'3" | PG Cadillac | 2023 State MI 6-1 2023 Cadillac Every time I have seen this young man this summer I have been impressed. After matching up with Wyatt Nausadis Wyatt Nausadis 6'4" | PG Traverse City St. Francis | 2023 State MI at the the Cadillac Summer Shootout he kept up the defensive intensity Tuesday. Had a few blocks and competed hard defensively. I like to see that in a setting like this. Offensively penetrated hard and sought out contact on drives. Seems to have tightened up his handle in the past year as he used to be a little loose with it. Could possibly develop into a point guard if he needed to. The statistics will never jump off the page as he plays for a deep and balanced Viking squad. But this prospect is capable of playing at the next level.
