The annual Battle at the Lakes tournament was filled with excellent talent again this year. Tony Roe checked out action at Maple Grove Middle School on Saturday, and Apple Valley High School on Sunday morning. Below are his all-tournament teams, taking a look at the best players he saw over the weekend.

First Team

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="957200" first="Tre" last="Holmes"] (PM North Showcase/Hibbing, MN)

Holmes played in the first game that I saw over the weekend, and he delivered the best individual performance that I took in. A 6-2 guard, he scored his team's first seven points, and continued that momentum throughout the morning on Saturday, scoring 22 first-half points in their win over Next Generation Blue. He's a knockdown shooter when he's in rhythm, burying five 3-pointers, and he used that shooting ability to open up the rest of his arsenal, blowing by his defender and getting to the rim routinely by attacking aggressive closeouts. He showed the ability to create his own look, and he moves really well off the ball to find open spaces in the defense.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="962680" first="Keaton" last="Farmer"] (Iowa Mavericks Grey/Waverly Shell-Rock, IA)

Another Saturday morning standout, Farmer was on fire from behind the arc in the Mavericks blowout win. He knocked down three straight 3-pointers in the first half, and then, like Holmes, used that start to open up the rest of his offensive game, getting to the rim in the second half and finishing. He moves really well off the ball and is squared and ready to shoot on the catch. He finished with 17 points in the Mavs win.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1143874" first="Jasper" last="Timm"] (Starks Elite/Duluth Marshall, MN)

Timm is a great all-around scoring threat who can really fill it up from all three levels. He's not an explosive athlete, but he does a great job playing with pace and changing speeds. He's a long, 6-3 wing who can really shoot it off the catch and has good footwork that he uses to create space to get his shot off. He was a massively important defensive player for Starks Elite as well, using his length to create chaos at the top of their press, getting his hands on a ton of passes, and turning defense into easy offense.

2024 Justin Janssen (Fox Valley Kings/Neenah, WI)

A 15U standout for the Fox Valley Kings, Janssen was absolutely on fire on Sunday morning, knocking down five 3-pointers and showing a quick release and a smooth, repeatable stroke that gets great rotation. He's a big-bodied, physical wing who finishes through contact around the bucket and rebounds at a high level on both ends of the floor. Fox Valley blew out their opponent, and Janssen led the way with 17 points.

2022 Jackson Weier (MSP Elite/Spring Lake Park, MN)

Arguably the best pure point guard that I saw over the weekend, Weier was two different players in MSP's win over MN Select. In the first half, he was a true playmaking guard who was threading the needle on passes for his teammates and shining in the pick-and-roll game as a passer. In the second half, he showcased his shotmaking ability, making tough shots both on and off-balance, off the dribble or the catch. He did a little bit of everything for MSP, and he's a high IQ player who can really handle it, pass it, and shoot.

Second Team

2022 Stephen Kesti (MSP Elite/Spring Lake Park, MN)

2021 Kevon Powell (PM North Showcase/Ashland, WI)

2022 Sam Kuseske (MN Select Mantey/Rosemount, MN)

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1167714" first="Zane" last="Witt"] (Iowa Mavericks Grey/Camanche, IA)

2024 AJ Howze (Minnesota Magic Premier/Anoka, MN)

Third Team

2024 Drew Hanzel (Fox Valley Kings/Waunakee, WI)

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682268" first="Zach" last="Erwin"] (Iowa Mavericks Grey/Camanche, IA)

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="784989" first="Nick" last="Bryant"] (Iowa Mavericks Grey/Western Dubuque, IA)

2021 Amarion Molette (Next Generation Blue/Plainfield South, IL)

2023 Luke Beighley (Chippewa Valley Select/Whitehall, WI)

Honorable Mentions

2023 Tysen Gerads (MN Comets Gagner/Albany, MN)

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="958643" first="Thomas" last="Diew"] (Hustle Hard MN/St. Cloud Tech, MN)

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="958663" first="Gavin" last="Luksik"] (Starks Elite/Bemidji, MN)

2022 Shane Leask (Starks Elite/Superior, WI)

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1184630" first="Donavan" last="Clinton"] (E1T1 Premier/Como Park, MN)

2024 Anthony Knight (Minnesota Matrix/Roseville, MN)

2023 Hayden Jacobsmeier (Iowa Mavericks Grey/Dubuque Senior, IA)

2022 Chakaris London (Next Generation Blue/Homewood Flossmoor, IL)

2023 Nate Wahl (MN Comets Gagner/Buffalo, MN)
