The event, which featured over 250 teams and some of the top programs in the Midwest, was one of the biggest events of the young grassroots season. My focus this weekend was on the 2023 division. Several players competed with maximum effort on seemingly every play. In this article, we take a look at some of the top high motor guys I had a chance to see.
Jaxon Handy 6’1 CG Full Package – Handy was listed at 6’4 in the program. He ain’t that, but it’s easy to see why someone would think that. He guarded multiple defenders and was all over the floor on the defensive side of the ball. On offense, when he got out in transition, the 6’1 combo was an absolute blur.
Kent Bucholz 6’4 SG M14 – Bucholz is going to make my all floor burn team. In one of the games I watched, it seemed as if he spent more time on the ground than standing up. He won a ton of 50/50’s and played with a ridiculous motor throughout the weekend.
Jordan Lumpkins 6’5 PF Rush Academy – Lumpkins is a problem. Guys that are built like physical specimens and play with high motors can cause havoc, and that’s exactly what he did this weekend. Lot of his energy came on the offensive end when he was in attack mode, Lumpkins has a good first step, and quick burst, and the aforementioned frame that allowed him to dish out contact on his drives to the basket.
Jacob O’Shea 6’5 PF Team Iowa – The energy and effort that O’Shea played with was palpable. He was one of the best teammates I saw during the weekend. He was almost more excited for his teammate’s plays than his own, and he had his share of plays. He rebounded ferociously, sprinted the floor, and won nearly every 50/50.
Jarrod Gee Jarrod Gee 6'5" | PF Perspectives | 2023 State IL 6’3 SF Chicago Lockdown (featured image) – I was originally going to write a positionless article to highlight Gee’s strengths, then I was going to add him as one of my top defenders. Ultimately I realized his best skill was his motor. The wirery wing with the long arms defended everyone while looking like the fastest player on the floor at times. He brought intensity every time he stepped on the floor and was one of the top glue guys for Lockdown this weekend.
