The ‘bigs’ category at small schools tends to encompass guys with guard skills just because of their height. They might be do-it-all types like Cason Richardson Cason Richardson 6'2" | CG Hesston | 2022 State KS , who is a well-established player on the state stage.
But there are a lot of other junior big guys trying to get noticed by colleges and prep for big senior seasons. Here are a handful we can’t wait to watch:
Jordan Fudge, Fronteanc:
This is probably the most intriguing guy to watch this spring. He’s a 6-foot-9 wing/post with potential that far exceeds his third-team 3A status. He’s getting national attention for his versatile skill set and athletic tools. With 17.8 points and 11 rebounds last year, he’s just getting started.
Jimmy Dorsey Jimmy Dorsey 6'6" | SG Wellsville | 2022 State KS , Wellsville:
It will be interesting to see just how far Dorsey can rise in comparison to bigger school wings. The 6-foot-4 junior had a breakout season. 20-point outings were common for this big shooter, and he looks like he could be the best big wing in 3A next year. He will take an even bigger role for the Eagles as they lose some good graduates.
Taylor Cable Taylor Cable 6'1" | SF Ness City | 2022 State KS , Ness City:
The 6-foot-4 junior is a walking double-double at the 1A level. Last year he was one of the top rebounders in the state with 14 per game. He took his small school team to the state semis. Now he will have a chance to pit his skills against some bigger school talents.
Noah Hastert Noah Hastert 6'6" | C Cair Paravel | 2022 State KS , Cair Paravel:
Hastert is no stranger to stiff competition, having played on high level club teams. But his work at tiny CPLS got more attention this year than ever before as the school got KSHSAA certification. The 6-foot-6 forward demonstrated some football talent that might take him down that path. But he’s a fundamentally sound and smart post who can put the ball on the floor and has a variety of post moves.
Jaden Boone Jaden Boone 6'3" | SG Quinter | 2022 State KS , Quinter:
Boone has put together a really good career at the 1A level, averaging a double-double the past couple of seasons. He averaged 20.5 points and 10.3 rebounds last year, dominating in the lane and occasionally making plays on the perimeter. He’s versatile and tough and will have a chance this summer to show what he can do against a broader range of players.
Trever Quaney Trever Quaney 6'8" | C Burlingame | 2022 State KS , Burlingame:
One of the biggest of all the big men around the small school scene, Quaney had a breakout season as a junior. He earned second-team 1A Div. 1 by leading Burlingame with 17.1 points and 11.9 boards as a junior. He’s big and strong, as you would expect a football standout to be. He can further develop his skills and build his reputation this summer.
