While this year was a little different, thanks to the NFHS there were still ways to watch the state championships and still players who were seen and made a name for themselves. One of those prospects was 6’11” Evan Ramsey Evan Ramsey 7'0" | C Abingdon | 2023 State VA of Abingdon, as the sophomore helped his school to the state championship before falling to Hopewell in the championship game.
Ramsey was a big part of their run as he asserted himself as one of the best big man prospects in the state, but he says the run was extra special because of the bond he had with his senior class.
“Well it means a lot because I have a very close bond with our seniors and we really grew as a team and I feel like I grew a lot as a player from the first game until the last in the state championship,” Ramsey said.
At 6’11”, it’s easy to see the height of Ramsey as one of the biggest reasons that he’s an intriguing prospect, but there’s plenty of guys with size who don’t get it done at his age. A good amount of what makes him so productive and intriguing is his mindset on the floor and his competitive nature on both ends of the floor, which he acknowledges.
“I’m a competitor, I work hard on the offensive and defensive glass and I finish around the rim when I can,” he said.
Ramsey is likely still growing, which is scary to think about, but his coordination and footwork will only get better as he continues to grow into his body. He knows that he needs to work on his quickness and continue to round out his skillset, and when he does that he’ll be very tough to handle.
“I need to work on my lateral quickness so I can switch on guards in the pick-and-roll, and I need to continue to work on my three-point shot to be a threat in the pick-and-pop.”
This summer, Ramsey is playing on a talented Big Shots Tri-Cities team with multiple other division one prospects. While he wants to compete against the best and win tournaments, he also says one of his biggest goals this summer is just to continue to improve and get better.
“I would like to get where I’m comfortable shooting from anywhere on the court and I would like to get my ball handling better so I can handle it around the perimeter.”
While Ramsey is without a division one offer right now, it won’t be long before schools come down to SWVA to see him once they can get back out and recruit in person. He says his coach has been contacted by quite a few schools already, including the two in state ACC programs in Virginia and Virginia Tech.
As for why he thinks coaches should take a trip to see him and start recruiting him, it all has to do with the attitude he brings toward the game.
“I compete on both ends, I play my heart out from the beginning of the game to the buzzer and that’s just how I play. I’m a winner!”
Ramsey will continue to make waves in the SWVA area and will likely start to be mentioned among the best prospects in a very talented 2023 class in the state. It will be interesting to see once college coaches can come back out who will make the trip out there, but once they see the potential I believe there will be plenty in the Abingdon area.
