High Schools throughout the state struggled to keep COVID-19 cases down before even starting tryouts Each school had a different set of protocols to follow and for many students, learning at home was considered normal with how long people have been doing it. This obstacle was a cause for concern from a lot of high school basketball players that were hoping to play. “Hybrid learning” became a theme for almost every high school in the state. Coaches and athletic directors continued to adjust their protocols and schedules to revolve around keeping people safe.
For many high schools in the state, completing a full basketball season without any interruptions due to COVID-19 is considered a success. Here is a breakdown of some of the Senior classmen in the state that shined brightly under the cloud of a global pandemic.
Russel Rav F (Bethany Christian Academy, Mendon MA)
Rav had quite the senior season averaging 18.7 points per game. Bethany Christian Academy only played Seven games but Russel made the most of his last year. Along with averaging 18.7 points, he also averaged 10 rebounds. It is unclear if Rav will continue his basketball career past high school, but he had a great senior year.
Jacob Barreria PG (Seekonk HS)
The Seekonk point guard had an impressive senior year. His assist numbers were low but he made up for it by having multiple great games throughout this unusual season. As a team, Seekonk didn’t have a great season, but Jacob was a bright spot. In 12 games, Barreria scored a total of 138 points.
Cameron Cunningham C (Berkley Regional HS- Somerset, MA)
The big man from Somerset cleaned up off the glass this winter for his team. He averaged 9.5 rebounds a game. Cunningham’s size is more suitable to be a power forward, but he fits in nicely as a center. Cameron played significant minutes for Berkley Regional and averaged 10.3 points per game.
Nathan Nova G/F (Bethany Christian Academy- Mendon MA)
Similar to Rav, Nova also had a great Senior year. Averaging 14.1 points per game, Nathan had a big impact on the court for his team. Not only did he produce scoring, but he also racked up a lot of rebounds. He averaged 6.6 rebounds per game.
Jaeden Greenleaf PG (Cape Cod Academy- Osterville, MA)
Greenleaf junior season was quite impressive. Even though he didn’t play the same competition as other players on this list, Jaeden’s performances in some of his games were like watching a highlight reel. He averaged 32.1 points per game. In total, he scored 449 points this season. In the first game of this season, he scored 57 points.
