Continue ReadingWith the AAU season ready to get underway and many kids not getting much attention due to Covid 19 over the past calendar year, we will take a look at some of the possible stock risers in VA as we head into the spring. We start by taking a look at some of the guards I expect to receive college attention here soon.
DJ Hand | 6’4” | Landstown/Team Loaded
Hand is a prospect who already holds a slew of high major and mid major offers, but I expect this summer for him to be able to showcase that he’s one of the elite scoring guards in the country on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit. He’s coming off of a junior season where he averaged close to or over 30 points per game, carrying Landstown to another state tournament appearance and putting his team on his back multiple times. He has good size for the next level and can score it from pretty much anywhere on the court whether he’s on or off the basketball, and it would shock me if once coaches get to see him he doesn’t just rake in offers left and right from high major programs.
Devin Ceaser Devin Ceaser 6'1" | CG St. Stephen's & St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’1” | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes/New World
Ceaser is one of the more unknown guards in the 2022 class in the state after reclassifying and heading to St. Stephen’s St. Agnes, and I fully expect him to turn heads this summer on the 3SSB Circuit with New World. He’s one of the most athletic guards in the state, if not on the east coast, as he has blazing speed in transition and can rise up and finish with the best of them or chase guys down and get big time blocks. He’s a two way guard that can take games over with his athleticism and playmaking ability, and I expect him to build on his offer slate of Merrimack,
Saxby Sunderland Saxby Sunderland 6'2" | CG Flint Hill | 2022 State VA | 6’3” | Flint Hill/New World
Sunderland is another under the radar guy who should have a big summer with New World and build upon the offer list he has now of Akron, SE Louisiana, VCU and NC A&T. The smooth combo guard is a high IQ and highly skilled dual threat guy that can create shots for both himself and others, and he has the ability to make tough shots from multiple levels and take a game over when he gets it going. He thinks the game well and can create shots late in the shot clock, and he’s capable of playing both on and off the basketball.
Kenyon Giles Kenyon Giles 5'11" | PG Oscar Smith | 2022 NV | 5’10” | Oscar Smith/Team Loaded
Giles is becoming one of the hottest names locally in southern VA, and if he gets the opportunity to show what he can do on the 3SSB Circuit he’s going to have a lot of low and mid major schools that will be considering him. He strikes you as the type of guy that may get overlooked, but go on to a school where he ends up being a steal and possibly getting some things done in March if everything works out his way. He’s a super skilled shot maker with range out beyond the NBA line, he’s explosive off the bounce and an explosive leaper and he brings a good IQ and instincts on both ends of the floor.
DJ Campbell | 6’1” | Kecoughtan/Boo Williams
Campbell showed throughout the CBG Series events that he’s ready to take the next step and should show on the EYBL Circuit that he can hoop with the best of them. He’s a highly cerebral guard who sees the game in slow motion it seems, as he seemingly always makes the right decisions whether it’s creating for others or finding ways to get to spots and make contested shots from all three levels, especially in the midrange area. He’s an underrated athlete and defender, and he already holds the local school offers in ODU, Norfolk State and Hampton and is starting to see interest from more already.
Walker Andrews Walker Andrews 6'1" | CG Virginia Episcopal | 2022 State VA | 5’11” | VES/ VA Premier
Andrews saw himself gain some college attention last summer playing with Premier’s 17U team including picking up an offer from NJIT, and this summer with teams prioritizing 2022s I could see him getting more interest soon. The 5’11” off guard isn’t the biggest guy but he’s a good athlete who can guard and has good instincts off the basketball, and he can flat out let it fly from deep and has in the gym range and gets hot quickly. He’s a confident shooter who has more to his game than most think, and if he plays in front of the right coach or program I could see him getting some stuff moving forward.
Cam Gregory Cam Gregory 6'5" | CG Steward School | 2022 State VA | 6’3” | Steward School/Team Richmond
Gregory is a name people in the Richmond area are somewhat familiar with, but if Steward School could have played an entire season he would be very well known. The long combo guard that transferred in from Maryland is a talented playmaker that impacts the game on both ends and is one of the hidden gems in the area. He has a good IQ and can play multiple roles, he’s a three level scorer both off the catch and off the bounce and he’s a high motor and tough kid that will surprise a lot of people this summer.
Brycen Blaine Brycen Blaine 6'5" | SG LC Bird | 2022 GA | 6’3” | LC Bird/BWSL Marsh
Blaine is coming off of a breakout season with LC Bird where he took the junior jump in terms of his approach to the game and production level. He’s a slashing combo guard that is able to get in the lane and get to the rim at will, he can catch and shoot from deep and he’s a big time on ball defender that can guard either guard position. As he continues to develop and fill out I could see the right division one program liking him and pulling the trigger this spring.
