After a strong start that had Mount St. Joseph off to a 12-0 advantage in the first five minutes, the Gaels went onto fight off a couple of Gilman comebacks and extended their lead, eventually going on to win by a final score of 64-43. Mount St. Joe improves to 4-1 with the win while Gilman falls to 3-3.
Here are the player evaluations from the contest:
Bryson Tucker Bryson Tucker 6'7" | CG IMG Academy | 2024 #15 Nation FL | 6’5 | Mount St. Joseph ’24
The biggest reason I wanted to attend this game was to see Tucker live. Over the last few weeks, there has been plenty of talk over his skill, size and potential as a true 14-year-old freshman. I was blown away. Tucker ended up leading the Gaels with 20 points and did so in an extremely efficient manner. The freshman cashed in on four three’s had a number of strong takes to the basket and converted at the free-throw line. While his scoring impressed, it was his overall feel and approach to the game that spoke volumes. He simply knows the right basketball play to make in almost any scenario and as you project his potential and development, sky’s the limit for Tucker.
Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | 6’2 | Gilman ’22
Winborne came into this game averaging a league-high 26.5 points per game. He finished with 19 in the loss and had to face countless double-teams throughout this game. Still, Winborne made it a point to get out in transition and when he did he attacked the rim with no intention of being stopped. If he wasn’t getting fouled and visiting the free-throw line, Winborne was finished tough layups and avoiding shot-blockers in the air. Opponents continue to key in on stopping Winborne, but he’s simply to skilled and gets too many opportunities to keep him from netting 20 points a night.
D’Angelo Stines D’Angelo Stines 6'2" | CG Mount St. Joseph | 2021 State MD | 6’3 | Mount St. Joseph ’21
Stines is a man on a mission this season to play both ends at a high level. He was matched up against Winborne in the first quarter and for much of the game. Despite Winborne hanging 19, the scenarios when Stines was guarding him in open space, the Old Dominion commit put the clamps on and prohibited Winborne any space. Stines also produced on the offensive end pouring in 15 points while seeming to hit big three after big three when Gilman would mount a comeback attempt.
Rayuan Lane | 5’11 | Gilman ’21
Lane has established himself as one of the strongest guards in the conference given his football background. Headed to the Naval Academy next fall, Lane is a stout guard who gets downhill, attacks the basket and embraces any sort of contact on his way. He chipped in with 12 points despite the loss, but his willingness to attack off the dribble provides some space and opportunities for shooters around the perimeter. Gilman’s shooters aren’t taking advantage as they’ve been in a slump for much of this shortened season but if they can find a groove, this team becomes dangerous.
Sean Carr Sean Carr 6'6" | PF Mount St. Joseph | 2021 State MD | 6’6 | Mount St. Joseph ’21
Carr logged a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds and he continues his steady production as the senior anchor inside. Carr scored in a variety of ways whether it was face-up jumpers by the high post, operating with his back to the basket or making timely cuts on the baseline for dump-off passes from guards. The Gaels did a nice job of limiting the Hounds to one-shot possessions and Carr is to credit for that with his rebounding presence.
