Monday’s standouts for Week 2

<p>The second week got underway, and players across the state have started to find their rhythm a bit more, which called for more big games. Here, we take a look across the state at some of the top standouts from Monday. </p> <h4><strong>Kevin McMahon – Broomfield</strong></h4> <p>Broomfield squeaked out a 59-52 win over Prairie View that came down to the wire, and the reason that they were able to pull it off is their Senior forward, McMahon. McMahon has been the player that the team has gone through, and the 6’5 prospect has not disappointed in the first three games. Against PV, McMahon put up 20 points to lead all scorers as he knocked down three 3-pointers and was aggressive offensively. He got to the FT line and helped come up with stops late. He is a player to watch.</p> <h4><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="917008" first="Anthony" last="Cortez-Latham"] – Columbine</strong></h4> <p>Latham is a welcomed addition to the Rebels squad as he transferred over this year, and it has been a positive for both sides. Latham is finally getting the opportunity to show that he is more than a role player and that he can come up with offensive explosion games. In Columbine’s blowout win over Pomona, it was the senior guard that led the way. Latham had a game-high 19-points and did his work from inside. He got to the FT line and into the teeth of the defense as he carved up the Panther defense. He is also a guard that makes the right reads and knows where to be on the floor. Having him be able to get going on both sides of the floor will open up the rest of Columbine’s game. Solid day for him.</p> <h4><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="916971" first="Schafer" last="Reichart"] – Doherty</strong></h4> <p>Reichart continues to show why he is one of the better combo-guards we have in the state, and the way that he has begun the season has backed up those claims. Reichart is getting it done for the Spartans, and his productive games have translated to wins. He is scoring with relative ease this season, and the thing about Reichart is how easily the game comes to him. Reichart plays at his own pace, creates shots for himself, and finds holes in the defense to make teams pay. In Doherty’s 73-46 win over Palmer Ridge, he was able to go for a game-high 19-points, which he has averaged on the season for one of the remaining 4-0 teams. Reichart is a player to keep eyes on that is having a sensational season so far.</p> <h4><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="918924" first="Jordan" last="McKay"] – Liberty</strong></h4> <p>Liberty closed out a close one in their battle against Vista Ridge, and it was on the back of the team’s best players, [player_tooltip player_id="918924" first="Jordan" last="McKay"]. McKay has been off to a stellar start of the season. McKay is having a career year at 20 points through three games and 9.7 rebounds a game as the junior has improved in essentially every category. He is a natural leader with a college-ready body and possesses the ability to break teams down both inside and out. McKay put up an impressive stat line of 18 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks as this do-it-all point-forward uses all his 6’3 frame to do what he wants on the court. I do not see him slowing down this season, so everyone else might as well catch on before it is too late.</p> <h4><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="916981" first="Austin" last="Peterson"] – Green Mountain</strong></h4> <p>Green Mountain were the victors in one of the evening’s most lopsided games as the Rams won 93-35. Green Mountain controlled the pace and tempo and made it a point to turn Conifer over often. Green Mountain got out and ran with it, scored plenty of fast-break points, and also had their shots falling as well. Their best player and leading scorer on the day was their Senior guard, [player_tooltip player_id="916981" first="Austin" last="Peterson"]. Peterson is a chippy and fierce competitor that wants to win. He is forcing guards into turnovers, setting traps, and also finding himself open offensively. Peterson caught fire on Monday. He had 21 points in the game, and they were all from beyond the arc. Peterson can score in a bunch of different ways so when he is on like this, pick your poison.</p> <h4><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="921098" first="Aliou" last="Diallo"] – Golden</strong></h4> <p>Golden has been a team that has switched out on who will stand out most in their first few games. They have had a new standout in each game, and that goes on to show how deep they are. Golden but an absolute beating on Alameda, which led to big scoring nights from the guards. Diallo is who benefited most from the big lead as he got out running and never looked back. Diallo put up a game-high 21 points in the game on an efficient 10-13 from the field. He was taking smart shots, getting out for outlet passes and fast-break points. He also recorded five steals, and a few of those turned into a basket the other way. With him getting into the mix offensively and staying aggressive, that Golden team becomes just a bit more dangerous, and this should be a game he tries to build off of.</p> <h4><strong>Max Howery – St. Mary’s</strong></h4> <p>We have heard about [player_tooltip player_id="918901" first="Sam" last="Howery"], the St.Mary’s point guard who is one of the best in the entire state and will be on a tear for this season and the next, but not many know, he has a brother, and he just might be just as much of a nightmare. Max Howery had unarguably his best high school game, and it is only his freshman season. Howery put up a career-high 32 points in the game on an ultra-efficient 13-17 from the field. He went 5-7 from beyond the arc and had six assists to let it be known that it was in the offense’s flow. If he can find his rhythm and be a part of this offense with these kinds of scoring runs, then the Pirates are not a team that I want to see anytime soon.</p>
