And he has the versatile skill-set to back that up.
“My greatest strength is my shooting ability at my size. And I’ve been working on being able to drive the ball more off the dribble,” said Verbeek. “And I can use my size down low pretty well sometimes. And when I’m on the floor I like to make my teammates better by making extra passes.”
Though he has some great height, he’s working to improve his slender frame, and adding weight is his primary goal right now.
“Putting on weight and strength is probably what I need to improve most. By the end of the season I’d like to be around 200 pounds,” said Verbeek.
That great size paired with his versatile skill-set has some area Division I coaches noticing.
“I’ve gotten a ton of letters and calls sand texts and stuff from CMU, Oakland. I’ve gotten a ton of letters from Creighton. I’ve been talking to Davidson,” said Verbeek.
He’s hoping that first offer comes in soon.
“Recruitment is definitely starting up, I’m still waiting for that first offer,” said Verbeek. “But I just have to keep working and it will come.”
He added: “I hope we have a great season this year and we get into the state finals, and I hope I go into AAU and show that I’ve giant stronger and hopefully those offers and more interest comes. But, it’s just a waiting game I guess.”
Now a junior with the Squires, Verbeek is ready to take on a much larger role with the team.
“I think my role is going to be more of a scorer this year. Last year we had a lot of seniors, so I’m going to have to do a lot more with the ball this year,” said Verbeek. “And I’ll have to take on more of a leadership role than I ever did before. It should be fun.”
