Since 1981, 18 of the winners of this award have gone on to be drafted in the NBA. It has been won by legends such as Chris Webber, Terry Mills, Cassius Winston, Glen Rice, and Sam Vincent. Last year, Benton Harbor’s Scooby Johnson claimed the honor. Given the difficulties involved with this season, the Mr. Basketball award may be even more difficult than normal to determine. It seems like the right time to introduce some of the candidates for the award this season.

Pierre Brooks Pierre Brooks 6'5" | SG Detroit Douglass | 2021 State #76 Nation MI II is one of the frontrunners to win the award this season. He’s a supremely talented shooting guard at Detroit Frederick Douglass. Prep Hoops Michigan has him ranked as the number 2 prospect in the state and Prep Hoops has him at number 76 in the country. Brooks II is a part of one of the top recruiting classes in the country at Michigan State University.
Brooks II was a well known prospect since the day that he arrived on the high school basketball scene. His game and his development as a player has been an absolute joy to witness. Brooks II has gone from a high upside freshman to one of the top prospects in the country.
Brooks II has created a niche in Michigan high school basketball that will allow him to go down as a legend in Detroit and Michigan as a whole. Let’s start with his physical gifts. He’s a sneakily skilled ball handler that protects the ball and gets it to where it needs to be. Brooks II is a back breaking shooter. He takes and makes the big shot and has range beyond the three point line. Brooks II makes quick moves to create space and makes fast and accurate decisions with the ball. Now, the even more impressive part of his game – the mental side. He has one of the highest basketball IQ’s that I have seen nationwide in the senior class. Brooks II has a supreme knowledge of, and feel for, the game of basketball. He keeps mental errors to a bare minimum.
Pierre Brooks Pierre Brooks 6'5" | SG Detroit Douglass | 2021 State #76 Nation MI II has a great chance of bringing home the Michigan Mr. Basketball award this season. He is the leader of a Detroit Frederick Douglass squad that has state title type talent. His performance on the court and in the classroom make him a great candidate for Mr. Basketball.
