Continue ReadingThe high school season in Virginia would usually be started by now, however it’s still up in the air in many areas are some school districts have already announced that they will cancel winter sports this year. However, we will remain optimistic that we will have some sports this year, and we will look forward as if we will.
We will take a look at our picks for preseason all area teams as if everyone will play, looking now at the 804 area which features some of the top talent in the state. This made it very difficult to pick the teams, but we did our best on what we’ve seen over the past few years and what we saw this summer and fall.
Here’s a look at the seven guys that just missed our cut for First or Second Team, but could easily be there by the end of the year.
Keyontae Lewis Keyontae Lewis 6'7" | PF LC Bird | 2022 State VA | 6’8” C | LC Bird 2022
Lewis is a guy who quietly had a good season last year for a young Bird team that took a few lumps but should be very good this year if they can play. While they’re a very balanced team, Lewis is a guy who makes them very tough to matchup with as he is big and physical in the paint, he can score it around the rim with both hands and step out to 15 feet and he’s a good passer in the paint as well. He’ a guy who takes up a lot of space and can be productive on both ends of the floor.
Brycen Blaine Brycen Blaine 6'5" | SG LC Bird | 2022 GA | 6’3” WG | LC Bird 2022
Blaine is another guy who showed flashes last year as a sophomore at Bird, and he’s shown big improvements this fall that makes me think he could be one of the top options on a deep team. The 6’3” wing is a guy who can play on or off the basketball and thrives with his ability to put it on the deck and get downhill to the rim pretty much at will. He can shoot it from deep off the catch, he’s shifty off the bounce and while he’s streaky at times he has the ability to make plays when his team needs him to the most.
Keishawn Pulley | 6’2” PG | St. Chris 2022
Pulley is part of a 2022 group at St. Chris that is very underrated in the area, and the way that he’s improved from a stand still shooter to a lead guard has been very impressive. He’s a guy who plays with good pace and makes good decisions for the most part, he’s able to knock down shots from deep and get to the paint where he can score at the rim and in the midrange and he’s a high IQ defender both on and off the basketball.
Curtis Allen Curtis Allen 6'2" | SF Prince George | 2022 State VA | 6’2” WG | Prince George 2022
Prince George is a little ways away from the city of Richmond, but they always have some players down there and Allen had a great sophomore year and will be a go-to guy for them this year. He’s done a great job getting himself in shape and he’s looking much more athletic because of it, he’s a guy who can really shoot it from deep and he plays with a great motor.
Deshawn Goodwyn Deshawn Goodwyn 6'4" | SG George Wythe | 2022 State VA | 6’3” WG | George Wythe 2022
One of the top shooters in the Richmond area, Goodwyn can absolutely stroke it from deep and he has no conscious about getting them up which leads to some very big scoring days from him. The 6’3” guard is a guy who works tirelessly off the basketball to get open, he can shoot it out to 30 feet with no problem and once he gets it going he can flat out fill it up and take over games with his shooting ability.
Cam Gregory | 6’2” CG | Steward School 2022
Gregory is a new name in the Richmond area after transferring from Maryland, and from what I saw this fall he’s going to be an immediate impact player for Steward and has the potential to be very good moving forward. He’s got great length at his position and can get to the rim with ease, he’s a multilevel scorer that can fill it up in bunches off the bounce and he has good feel and instincts on both ends of the floor.
Logan Rhoades Logan Rhoades 6'2" | CG Mills Godwin | 2023 State VA | 6’1” WG | Mills Godwin 2023
Rhoades is the son of one of the most famous men in the Richmond basketball scene, but he’s set to make his own mark in the area after a stellar freshman year and a lot of improvement from last year. The 6’1” guard is a knock down shooter from deep who has improved in his ability to put it on the deck and make plays for himself and others, and he’s got the ability to create something out of nothing and find his way to the line for easy points. On a young Godwin team that needs someone to step up and take over, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rhoades ends up being that guy moving forward.
