Most noticeably the ball-handling, ankle breaking moves, pure speed, and sharp shooting is what kept my attention. These eight guards look to bring the heat this winter basketball season.
Christian Bown-Webb, Jr. 6’2 Bishop Miege
He’s always on balance whether attacking the basket for a strong finish with either hand, or dragging his defender then stopping on a dime for a pull-up jumper. He played strong looking to showcase his skill while also getting teammates involved. Very hard to stay in front of him with his quickness and great handle.
Damare Smith, Jr. 6’0 Shawnee Mission Northwest
It’s always nice to see ball handlers play with their eyes up and Damare did that all day. He see’s the floor great and made some spectacular full-court passes to reward the bigs running the floor. He’s strong and shifty with his moves and completely controls the pace of the game playing at different speeds.
Austin Smith, Sr. 5’9 Junction City
Austin was always poised and under control with his style of play. He keeps his dribble alive until he’s ready to make a smart decision to pass or shoot. Steadily attacking the defense, he played quick and fast with a great handle. At 5’9 he’s still able to get anywhere he wants on the court with shifty moves and confidence.
Ty’ren Miller, Sr. 5’10 Heights
Like a blur, he’s super quick with the ball in his hands. Often seen making the right plays with strong decision making. He handled the ball great under pressure with strong drives to the basket. This kid was able to get downhill within the blink of an eye. He should have a strong senior campaign.
Kaeden Bonner, Soff 5’11 Seaman
CAUTION: Splash Zone! I’m not sure Kaeden ever so much as braised the rim one time as he rained three-pointers, because they were ALL net. There were no limits to his range as he casually shot and hit from anywhere past the half-court line. Aside from great form and shooting, he also plays with solid fundamentals.
Luke Tolbert, Jr. 5’11 Garden City
Luke definitely held his own throughout the showcase. He worked to get his teammates involved making the right passes in the right spots. His crossover was lightning quick and a nightmare for defenders when in isolation from the top of the key. He played great with toughness and passion.
Juan’Tario Roberts, Jr. 5’10 Land Park
This kid was flat out hard to guard, exciting to watch, and a leader on the court. He gave defenders fits with his shifty quickness with the ball in his hands. Getting downhill was effortless and he finished well with either hand. You can tell he’s worked hard on his skills all summer and looking to showcase his abilities this winter season.
Luke Williams Luke Williams 6'0" | PG Olathe South | 2021 State KS , Sr. 5’11 Olathe South
As a defender, you better be ready to move your feet, sit down and guard with Luke in front of you. His ball handling is explosive which leads to highlight after highlight offensively. Always keeping his dribble alive, very hard to stay in front of, and kept defenders guessing his next move. He was successfully able to get to his spots and create scoring opportunities for himself and teammates.
