The rivalries are intense and the basketball is high-octane. Boasting some of the most successful college programs in the country, Philly breeds some of the best prospects on the high school court.
Here is a list of a few rising juniors you should be aware of as the 2020-21 season takes flight.
Masud Stewart Masud Stewart 6'0" | PG Neumann-Goretti | 2022 State PA , PG Neumann Goretti: Stewart has everything you want in a point guard, including hops for his size. He can shoot from the outside with ease and looks confident from three. When he has the ball at the top of the key, he can dish it off to a teammate after penetrating the arc or can drive into the lane himself, creating space for a shot. Stewart is not afraid to draw contact and he can slow down or sleep up the tempo of the game on offense as he wants. If he gets on the break, he can throw it down.
Aamir Hurst, G Neumann Goretti: Hurst is very quick and agile. A pesky defender, he can pick-pocket a player on the defensive end and throw an outlet pass for an easy score or drive down the court himself. His tall, lanky frame makes him a great defender at the top of the key and allows him to weave through the lane on offense. Don’t underestimate his shot as he looks very comfortable with his mid-range shot and also, he has some serious bounce.
Christian Kirkland Christian Kirkland 6'7" | SF Friends Select | 2022 State PA , SF Roman Catholic: Already 6-7 going into his junior year, Kirkland has size and length to his advantage. He has excellent court vision and is aggressive on offense. He can finish at the basket no problem, but he also follows up his or his teammates’ shots and is there for the offensive rebound to put back up or to restart another possession. With the departure of Jalen Duren, Kirkland will be one of Roman Catholic’s go-to shot blockers, so expect a lot more in that department and in rebounds this season.
Quadir Brown, SG Roman Catholic: Brown didn’t see the court much during the 2019-20 season, but expect his playing time to soar this season as he will be one of Roman’s more reliable guards. He has great court awareness on both sides of the ball and is very good at controlling the tempo of a game. Brown is a facilitator, but can manufacture and create his own shots on the court. He will be relied on to produce and expect him to produce with more time on the court.
Jalen Snead Jalen Snead SG Archbishop Ryan | 2022 State PA , SG Archbishop Ryan: Snead has the quickness and agility you want in a guard. He can drive into the lane and finish, or can dish it off to a teammate. As an on-ball defender, Snead is really good at tracking his player, especially when they are making a move to the lane. He matches up really well with other guards and when he gets the ball on offense, he has a soft touch in the lane and a clean stroke from beyond the arc. Snead will continue to develop, so expect him to do big things this upcoming season.
There are plenty more players to profile, so stay tuned as the season approaches.
