After an injury kept Pickerington Central wing Adrian Nelson out for much of his sophomore season, his recruitment seemed to take a bit of a hit.
The 6-foot-6 junior only played in three games last season because of a stress fracture in his back, but spent his summer regaining his familiarity with the game on the 16U circuit.
“Coming back it was kind of hard to get back into the flow of the game and stuff. And I had to work on my game more than I ever had to, to get back to where I needed to be. It took a lot of work and dedication,” said Nelson.
“And then as the AAU season went along, that's when my recruitment started to pick up again, because I was under the radar.”
Since the completion of his 16U season, three Division I schools have extended offers. First Stony Brook, then Air Force and Detroit Mercy.
Other high-major schools have taken notice as well.
“I have interest from West Virginia, Xavier, a little bit from Tennessee, and those are the big ones,” said Nelson. “Tennessee came to one of my open gyms, and then I went down there to visit. And then West Virginia sends me mail, and so does Xavier.”
He added: “I'm looking forward to getting high major D1 offers and things like that, and just becoming better as a player.”
A wing with great size, Nelson explained his playing style to PHOH.
“My strengths are getting to the basket and scoring on the inside,” he said. “I'm a good rebounder and a defensive player, things like that.”
His role is simple with the Tigers this season.
“I'll be more of a vocal player and a leader. And when we need to score I'll be a guy that gets the ball.”
