In his first season at Dunham after transferring from Rummel, a private school just outside of New Orleans in Metairie, Wright helped Dunham to a 29-6 overall record with a trip to the Class 2A quarterfinals in 2015-16. He averaged 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists as a freshman, was a first-team selection in District 8-2A and an Honorable Mention on the LSWA Class 2A All-State team.
Wright spent this past summer improving his game with Elfrid Payton Elite’s 15U team and is looking to improve on last year’s season at Dunham. The sophomore is a multi-faceted player that can play either of the guard spots with ease and has great size for the position. His strength and ball handling allows him force his way into his desired spots on the floor and he has the vision and playmaking ability to get others involved as well.
“It’s definitely a focus, probably my main focus because once I get my teammates involved it opens up a lot for me,” Wright said. “Getting them involved creates driving lanes and more scoring opportunities.”
“My size helps me tremendously, it allows me to be more versatile,” he added. “I can post smaller guards and score on the perimeter when bigger defenders are guarding me. Many people have told me I play ‘bully ball’, which is accredited to my size.”
Wright is a freight train in the open court and generally makes the right decision when deciding whether to take it strong to the rim or find a teammate for an easy bucket. He can finish through contact and with either hand and has a good stroke at the free throw line.
Most of Wright’s points come in the paint and at the stripe but he’s also a capable shooter that’s working to improve that part of his game. Defensively, he has the potential to be an asset on that side of the floor with good lateral quickness and good communication skills and Wright is always looking to get better.
“Shooting is my main focus right now,” he said. “My shot has improved a lot since last season but I want it to be better. I’ve also been working on my foot work and my speed so I can guard smaller guards.”
“My mentality on defense is to be very vocal and make sure I always give my best effort,” Wright added. “At the moment, I’m close to where I want to be but not there yet. I need to be able to guard all positions at any point in time.”
Wright has the size to do so on the high school level and is fully capable of defending guards, and even some wing players once he hits the college ranks. The 6-foot-5 standout said he’s already received offers from TCU, Virginia Tech and Southern and is also receiving interest from Houston and Western Kentucky. It should only be a matter of time before more programs decide to join the race for Wright’s services and look for the sophomore to have a big year in 2016-17.
