757 Season Preview: Top Playmaking Point Guards

The Hampton Roads area continues to be one of Virginia's top regions for high school basketball talent, and we project there to be more than 35 college prospects in the senior class competing throughout the 757 this season. As the 2026-27 season approaches, we take a closer look at some of the top playmaking point guards who are poised to make an impact this winter.    Montague is coming off a productive offseason with a highly successful [program_tooltip program_id='3424568' first='Team' last='Loaded Gold'] program, where he averaged double figures in scoring, and looks poised for a strong senior campaign. A big, physical lead guard, he combines scoring ability with good court vision, sound decision making and the ability to create opportunities for his teammates. He is a capable perimeter shot maker with range beyond the arc and uses his strength effectively on the offensive end. Montague also brings a willingness to compete as an on ball defender. Several of the region's top small college programs are actively pursuing him.     Crittendon is a quick, attacking lead guard who handles the basketball well and consistently puts pressure on opposing defenses with his ability to get into the paint. He is a creative finisher around the basket who uses his quickness and ball handling skills to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. His perimeter shooting continues to improve, adding another dimension to his offensive game. Crittendon is also a willing on ball defender who brings good effort and competitiveness to that end of the floor.     A high academic prospect in the 2027 class, Hawkins Jr. is a quick, skilled lead guard with a good feel for the game and the versatility to contribute as both a scorer and facilitator. He changes speeds effectively, uses his ball handling ability to create offense off the dribble and is a creative finisher in the paint. Hawkins Jr. sees the floor well, makes good decisions with the basketball and understands how to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. He will be an important part of a talented Crusaders senior class this season.     Johnson is a quick, shifty and dynamic lead guard for Landstown who impacts the game on both ends of the floor. An outstanding on-ball defender, he uses his quickness and competitiveness to apply consistent pressure on opposing guards. Offensively, he is a pass first point guard with excellent ball handling skills who excels at using ball screens to get downhill. He changes speeds effectively, consistently gets into the paint and has the ability to finish creatively around the rim or find open teammates. Johnson is also effective in transition and has the ability to knock down open perimeter shots, giving him a well rounded offensive game.     King Jr. is a dynamic, versatile lead guard who can make an impact as both a scorer and distributor. He has the quickness and ball handling ability to get past defenders, uses ball screens effectively and displays creativity finishing around the basket. A capable playmaker who can create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, he is also a solid open perimeter shot maker. King Jr. stood out at the TTO Showcase this offseason and looks poised for a productive senior campaign.     Coming off a junior season in which he earned Class 5 All-State honors, Harper is a talented scoring guard who can generate offense in a variety of ways. He is a skilled perimeter shot maker with range beyond the arc and has the quickness and creativity to break down defenders off the dribble. Harper uses ball screens effectively, reads defensive coverages well and has a good feel for when to attack the paint or create opportunities for his teammates. He is a crafty finisher around the basket and brings the ability to score at all three levels. Defensively, Harper is a competitive on ball defender who can apply pressure and disrupt opposing offenses.     Freeman is a tough, competitive scoring guard for Norview who combines above average quickness with the ability to create offense at all three levels. He is particularly effective attacking off the dribble, using his quickness to get past defenders and create scoring opportunities in the paint. Freeman also displays good touch on his jumper and is a capable shot maker off the bounce from the midrange and beyond the arc. His ability to put pressure on defenses as both a perimeter shooter and an attacking guard makes him a prospect for college coaches to track throughout his senior season.
