Texas Freshman Showcase: Lockdown Defenders

If today's players want to get noticed quickly by scouts and coaches, they'd be wise to focus on defense first. The group of student athletes below took that to heart and displayed tough defense on the floor consistently.    Jonah is a physical, quick combo guard that can be a nightmare for opponents looking to comfortably rack up points. He's locked in on his assignment from the jump and causes turnovers that result in extra points for his team regularly. His lateral movement is excellent and it's rare to see anyone get past him cutting to the rim. He's fearless in the lane offensively, finishing through contact and sacrificing his body to win. He's a wonderful passer off the dribble and consistently set up his teammates with great looks.     Isaiah is a tough, gritty combo guard that can halt a fast break with the way he approaches defense alone. He never shies away from any opponent and isn't afraid to be as physical as needed to accomplish victory. He has an excellent mid-range game with great lift on his shots that allows him to sink jumpers over lengthier defenders. His drives to the hoop are strong and he has no problems finishing at the rim through contact.     David is a long, tenacious player that can positively influence the game in a myriad of ways with his presence. He's excellent on defense with the way he anticipates opposing jump shots and times his elevation perfectly to deflect or block attempts again and again. He rarely gives his assignments any space, which results in them never getting to a point where they feel like they're comfortable or in a groove. He stretches the floor nicely with his shooting range offensively and has the ability to put in great work on the glass and be effective in the paint.     Jace is an incredibly speedy, strong point guard that can frustrate the biggest opponents with his hands alone. He's smart with how he goes after the ball, rarely getting called for reaches but racking up steals and opposing turnovers consistently. One thing I particularly love about Rustin's game is his willingness to take risks defensively. He may rack up a foul or two more than average, but the impact he has on the game for his team proves far more valuable. He never hangs his head; it's always immediately onto the next play and the next task at hand for him. He doesn't back down from any assignment and it shows with his physical, effective play.     Aydan is a relentless, motivated combo guard that is ravenous on the floor when it comes to frustrating and exhausting his opponents without fouling. He's strong and physical, but never foolish with his reaches or contact. He's a great passer off of his drives and regularly finds open teammates on the perimeter. He can finish at the rim and get to the line with consistency, and you'll never see him quit on a play on either end of the floor.
