Next Up: PSAL 4A Bronx/Manhattan Breakout Candidates

The PSAL annually provides opportunities for new names to emerge, and the 2026-27 season should be no different. Whether it's a talented freshman jumping directly into a varsity rotation, a young player making the move up after impressing at the lower levels, or a returner finally getting the minutes and touches to showcase what he can do, every program has someone capable of taking a significant step forward. We go team by team through the 4A PSAL Bronx/Manhattan division to identify one player from each team who could be poised for a breakout season.    The talented wing guard has popped on a handful of occasions with the Brooklyn Lions over the last couple of months and looks ready to step into a fairly large role for a Stevenson team that graduates a good bit of production from a team that finished 5th in the division last season. Big man Ish lara is back, and will need a perimeter scorer to compliment him. Bethune's length, quickness, and shooting ability make him a good bet to do just that. College programs at all levels have begun to take notice- and as a younger member of the class of 2027, a post-grad year may be on the horizon. Regardless, his best basketball lays well ahead of him.     Jaby was electric in their two playoff games last season- scoring 23 in one and flirting with a triple-double in the other. The question becomes with real minutes on the varsity team this season, how much of that production will scale and translate? A rangy guard capable of heating up in a hurry or getting to the rim and scoring, Jaby does seem ready to step into one of the primary scoring roles left behind by DeWitt's 2026 class. Running with Gauchos this Spring and Summer, it was clear that he was one of, if not the best long term prospect on that team as well. As DeWitt continues to acclimate to life in 4A, Jaby offers them a playmaker and scorer to battle with the upper half of the PSAL.     The Bishop Loughlin transfer brings the Eagles instant offense. Equipped with a quick first step and a dependable shooting stroke, Lawson is capable of putting up points in bunches. During their run at Smartball, it was often Lawson who sparked runs when his team needed it the most. Playing on a team that gets out and travels more regionally and competes at the top of their league should help him on the recruitment front as well.     Another rangy wing who plays bigger than he is, Benston was amongst the top rebounders for Monroe last season. His motor and energy on both ends fit the Eagles system and his ability to attack off the dribble makes him a hard cover in the PSAL. He needs to get stronger, but the thought is that this year he goes from complimentary piece to one of the primary ones in his final season at Monroe. Small colleges would be wise to prioritize him now.     The slashing wing was one of the best scorers and rebounders on last year's team that went 5-9 in league last season, and got better as the year went on. That momentum carried into the AAU season, where Grace again was one of the best players on Team Jerome's Challenger Circuit in almost every aspect as well. Entering his final year of PSAL play, All-League honors may be on the table with a strong season.     After a stellar junior campaign, it's more than likely [player_tooltip player_id='3422956' first='Tristan' last='Uzzle']'s show to run at Brandeis this Fall and Winter. That being said, Murphy appears ready to take a step up in a real way as a senior. The 6-foot-5 wing forward is powerfully built, and is an elite slasher and rebounder in the PSAL thanks to his motor, size and strength. Brandeis has been highly competitive under this current staff. helping players find the right college home along the way. Look for Murphy to emerge as a scholarship level player this season.     A cat-quick lead guard with a great first step and good vision, it will be up to Hill to be the straw that stirs the drink at TMA this season. A team that wants to get out and run historically, Hill fits the archetype of point guard that has thrived at TMA. His skill in setting the table for his teammates and a slick handle will make him one of the more entertaining creators in the PSAL this season.     The electric lead guard is the most productive returnee from last year's title contender team, and now has the keys turned over to him. An explosive leaper. he finishes well above the rim and uses his quick hands and feet to get into passing lanes and force turnovers. If Wings are going to contend this season- Jeter has a big part to play.
