GASO Fall Tour Houston: Young Guns On The Rise Turning Heads

This weekend, the GASO Fall Tour made their annual stop at the Mi3 Center in Houston. This was a one-day event taking place on Saturday and had varsity squads from all over Houston showcased as well as some out of town teams making the trip in. Several teams caught my attention with some terrific chemistry, ball movement, and defense including Atascocita, Cy Ranch, Hendrickson, CE King, and Cy Falls. Let's further examine some young prospects who stood out to me when I watched them compete on Saturday.

2030 guard RJ White had himself quite the weekend for Atascocita at the GASO Houston event. Starting at point guard in the absence of [player_tooltip player_id='2251881' first='Royce' last='Shelton'], White had some of the best assists I saw all weekend. Constantly threading the needle on passes in the paint to his post players and finding open shooters on the perimeter, he displayed high level vision and court awareness. He can pull up in the midrange and shoot efficiently from the elbows as well as speed past defenders in transition. Great defensive quickness and instincts allow him to capitalize against opposing lazy ballhandlers. This is one of those players everyone needs to keep an eye on!

KJ Goodwin got anything and everything to fall in the paint against Atascocita in Cy Ranch's win on Saturday. He bullied his way to the rim against smaller competition and drew fouls as well, having several chances to get points at the free throw line. He showed that he can set hard screens for defenders to get through and he is effective rebounding the ball due to his athleticism. Once he gets downhill, I wouldn't recommend getting in his way as he picks up speed quicky and will use leaping ability or finesse moves to get around opposing matchups to the rim. KJ currently has an offer from Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

Legend is a guard that I will be closely monitoring from this point on as he made an impact on offense from the perimeter. He has a quick release on his jumper and consistently knocks down shots from three point land if left open. He also used some shifty dribble moves to shake defenders and get to his spots where he can pull up from with high IQ and decision making. He draws fouls at a high rate and always positions himself where he knows he can get an open look or create space for another teammate. White has the ability to get hot in a hurry from all three levels of the floor scoring the basketball and he also plays tough, physical defense on the perimeter. He is a smart decision maker in transition, and he makes plays happen either for his open teammates or he will score efficiently in isolation situations. Filling his lane correctly in transition and getting in the paint to finish layups through contact is a strong point for Kaiden and he only continues to flourish on a team that values his leadership.

JD Humphries is one of those players who impresses me every time with his skillset on both sides of the floor. He scores with a light touch under the rim, converting layups and short floaters over taller defenders in the paint. He is capable of shooting over opposing players either off the dribble in the midrange or on the perimeter. The game I watched him in against Seven Lakes this weekend, he spent most of the time at the point guard slot and was responsible for controlling the tempo of the offense. He will be a critical piece for Cy Falls this year as a vocal leader on defense and a top scorer every night. The 2028 6'4 guard currently possesses offers from California, Western Kentucky, and SMU.
