New Jersey Legacy Team Camp: Even More Session I Standouts

Returning for another summer, New Jersey Legacy Basketball once again assembled a talented group of North Jersey programs and prospects for its annual team camp. The multi-day event featured competitive matchups while giving many of the state's prospects an opportunity to showcase their abilities ahead of this upcoming season. Hosted at Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ this year's New Jersey Legacy Team Camp provided an early look at players settling into new programs following offseason transfers, as well as others preparing to take on expanded roles this winter, offering valuable insight into which prospects appear primed to make a significant impact during the high school season. With that in mind, here's one last look at some more prospects who stood out during the opening session of New Jersey Legacy's Team Camp earlier this week.    A talented combo guard with legitimate ball skills who has a natural overall playmaking mentality, [player_tooltip player_id='2948559' first='Jayden' last='Opoku'] is figured to see expanded usage this winter in hopes of filling the void of some of the offensive creation that this Linden program lost to graduation from a season ago. In moments of increased volume, particularly on the second day of action, Opoku looked comfortable handling a higher usage rate— featuring a mixture of shot creation, getting to his spots and creating slight separation off the bounce for smooth mid range side steps and turn around jumpers and ball distribution, maintaining his court vision in the open floor and advancing the ball up the floor in transition and even flashing his ability to hit pocket passes in different ball screen actions.     Although more raw on the side at this point in his on court development, [player_tooltip player_id='2921225' first='Jayden' last='Porterfield'] still impressed, showcasing the foundational potential he possesses as a lengthy wing with hints of fluidity to his game. New to this Newark Tech program and finding his footing amongst a new group, Porterfield still found different ways to be productive in his role and stood out in spurts— establishing himself as a capable threat from three point range, going up at the basket strong and not shying away from contact when attacking closeouts off the bounce, leveraging his length on the glass and being impactful on the boards, defending multiple positions with length, effort and energy, and even flashing some of his ability to initiate the break and making the right reads in the open floor.     One of the bigger revelations earlier this week was without the doubt some of the depth that this year's Bergen Catholic group is projected to have amongst their rotation, and the intriguing and productive wing [player_tooltip player_id='3717531' first='Riley' last='Bonitto'] should have plenty to do with that as the winter approaches. Impressive in his ability to be an overall connective piece, Bonitto was extremely productive in the minutes he was provided off the bench— shooting the three ball with efficiency and confidence off the catch, attacking closeouts and going up strong and not shying away from contact at the basket, as well as not letting his production dip on the defensive end of the floor, pressuring the ball with plenty of effort and energy.     A valuable piece to this Newark Tech group particularly with his ability to bring intensity, effort, and energy defensively and provide offensive production off the ball, [player_tooltip player_id='3718400' first='Caleb' last='Marchan'] shined in key moments in doing just that. A connective piece that supplies a large amount of value as a glue guy Marchan's impact was evident— ball pressure and active hands the length of the floor to be disruptive defensively against opposing ball handlers, filling the lanes in transition for an array of in traffic finishes and explosive dunks, moving well without the ball as a cutter in different half court actions, and establishing himself as a respectable threat from three point range off the catch,     Another big surprise on the week, a piece that's expected to be an extremely reliable and productive depth piece for this year's Bergen Catholic group, [player_tooltip player_id='3718407' first='Tyler' last='Schwartz'] figures to be emerging as a quality knockdown three point shooter. Schwartz impressed in his ability to provide valuable floor spacing and efficient perimeter shooting off the ball— settling into a nice rhythm from distance and establishing himself as a sharpshooting catch and shoot threat who buried countless open looks, across multiple matchups at that too.
