As the upcoming high school basketball season approaches, every team has players who will be asked to take on bigger roles and become difference-makers when the games begin to matter. Impact does not always come strictly from filling up the scoring column. Leadership, toughness, defensive intensity, playmaking, shooting, versatility, and the ability to make winning plays can be just as valuable. The following prospects each bring something different to the table, but they share one thing in common: their teams will be counting on them to make a significant impact this season. Their production and development could go a long way toward determining just how successful their respective programs can be...

Malachi has a silky-smooth offensive game that is complemented by the tenacity and toughness he brings in the more physical areas of the game. He has positional size and gives Oakwood Adventist a versatile wing who can impact possessions in multiple ways. He plays with confidence and fluidity offensively, but what adds another dimension to his profile is his willingness to mix it up in the paint, compete defensively, and embrace the physical side of the game. That combination of skill and toughness gives him the opportunity to become an important two-way piece this season. As Malachi continues developing his overall perimeter game and becoming more consistent from possession to possession, his role and production should continue to grow.

Kam is the type of high-motor backcourt talent whose impact can extend well beyond the scoring column. He brings energy and urgency to the floor, consistently finding ways to influence possessions with his activity. He rebounds well for his position, including coming away with timely boards in traffic, and uses his length and lateral quickness to be disruptive defensively. His athleticism shows both horizontally and vertically, allowing him to cover ground, create deflections, challenge plays, and turn defense into transition opportunities. The activity level is one of the biggest separators in his game because he does not need the ball in his hands to make his presence felt. He has a high ceiling, and continued development of his skill set alongside those physical tools could make him an increasingly valuable two-way contributor for Homewood.

Andre continues to emerge as a floor general whose developing PG IQ should make him an important piece for JCA. He has a natural feel for creating offense, particularly with his ability to get to his spots in the midrange, where he can consistently punish defenders. However, he is not simply looking for his own offense. He recognizes openings as they develop, attacks gaps, and creates opportunities for teammates. His unselfish approach is one of the most encouraging aspects of his game, as he understands that making the right play and contributing to winning are more important than individual numbers. He can shoot the rock, compete at a high level defensively, and has shown the leadership qualities you want from a lead guard. With his ability to balance scoring and facilitating while continuing to grow as a decision-maker, he has a chance to significantly impact JCA this season.

Akeem brings many of the characteristics coaches value in a glue guy. He is athletic, gritty, competitive, and willing to bring energy and intensity on both ends of the floor. His defensive impact has been a major part of his identity, but the growth of his offensive game could allow him to take another step this season. Akeem put significant work into developing his skill set during the offseason, and that progression has helped turn him into a more legitimate offensive threat. That is important because he already has ways to impact winning without having plays called for him. If his offensive development carries over consistently into game situations, Columbia will have a much more complete two-way weapon. His combination of defense, athleticism, toughness, and an expanding offensive arsenal should make him an important piece for his team this season.

Dalton gives Hewitt-Trussville a combo guard with positional size, versatility, and the ability to make an impact on both ends of the floor. He is comfortable playing on or off the ball, which gives his team flexibility in how he can be utilized offensively. One of his biggest weapons is his perimeter shooting. He is a high-level shooter with a quick trigger and legitimate range, making him a floor-spacing threat defenses have to account for at all times. However, his value extends well beyond shooting. He is an ultimate competitor who hates to lose and brings that mentality to the defensive end. He stays active, gets his hands into passing lanes, generates deflections and steals, and can create havoc with his defensive activity. The combination of positional size, shooting, competitiveness, and two-way production gives him the tools to be a significant piece for Hewitt-Trussville this season.

Landyn is a skilled lead guard whose combination of ball-handling, pace, vision, and perimeter shooting gives him several ways to create offense. He does a good job changing pace and direction with the ball, utilizing hesitations, crossovers, and sudden bursts to keep defenders off balance. That ability allows him to create separation and get into areas of the floor where he can become both a scorer and facilitator. His court vision adds another dimension, as he sees openings develop and has the passing creativity to deliver the ball from different angles. Defenses also have to respect his jumper. He is confident shooting both off the catch and off the dribble, which forces defenders to crowd him on the perimeter and can create additional driving lanes. As he continues developing his command of the PG position, he has the tools to become an important offensive catalyst and floor general for Austin.
