Kentucky Freshman Showcase: Mike's Standouts

The Kentucky Freshman Showcase had some standout performers and in this article I'll take a look at five prospects who stood out above the competition on Saturday.    I liked Walker's frame for a rising freshman guard, showing the ability to bring the ball up the court while also making plays as a pick and roll ball handler and decision maker. Walker's frame and length also allowed him to contest straight up against layups, causing misses at the rim. With Walker's combination of size, ball handling ability and a frame that will continue to fill out with maturity and work in the weight room, he projects as an impact player at the varsity level sooner rather than later in his high school career.     One of the higher IQ prospects at the event, Roberson has had experience playing against older and more mature competition than a lot of the rest of the prospects at the event. That advanced IQ was on display numerous times throughout the day as Roberson moved well off the ball to make himself available for his guards to dish to him while also being in the right spots to crash the offensive glass. Roberson had a nice and-1 finish off a BLOB set that allowed him to catch the ball in the paint and he also scored multiple layups off second chance opportunities. On the defensive end of the court, Roberson played tough help-side defense and forced multiple turnovers with his length and activity. Roberson is another player who projects as an impact varsity contributor and could be one of the top wing forwards in Louisville's 2030 class.     Ashby had some big performances during the 5 on 5 part of the showcase with his final game being maybe his best. Ashby can get hot from 3-point range as he's a confident shooter off the catch, especially from the wing. I liked Ashby's pace on the ball as he showed the ability to slow down and use hesi moves to beat the defense off the dribble. If Ashby grows another couple inches by the time he hits senior year he could develop into one of the best wings in Kentucky's 2030 class.     The lefty Lewis was one of the taller players at the showcase and certainly wasn't afraid to go to work in the paint. Lewis is a hard left-hand driver who likes the chicken wing extension to create space, showing his physicality and determination to get to the paint. Lewis found success shielding the ball from the defense and keeping the ball high at the rim where the defense couldn't contest the shot. Overall, I was impressed with Lewis's motor and ability to use his height and length to his advantage on the court.     Roby did a nice job turning defense into offense on Saturday with multiple steals leading to fast break layups, including one inside hand finish on the left side with his right hand that capped off a great sequence. Roby liked the quick right hand finish on the left side of the rim and caught the defense off guard with that finish a couple times off drives. Roby also showed the ability to make the extra pass to an open teammate and crashed the offensive glass well for a guard. Watch out for Roby in Kentucky's 2030 class!
