Guards to Keep Eyes on This Fall

We're fortunate to have an immense amount of guard talent in Texas. The student athletes below put in the work on the court and behind the scenes to ensure they stand out from the pack.    Julius is a swift, determined combo guard that consistently puts in the work, and it shows on both ends of the floor. His ballhandling ability is elite, often dizzying his defenders and leaving them off-balance while he sinks jumpers over them. He has a nice shooting touch best displayed by his floaters in the lane. His fadeaway is nearly unblockable and he never shies away from physicality. One of my absolute favorite things about Johnson's game is his stellar work on defense. His lateral footwork is incredibly impressive and he always stays in front of his man, even when facing elite scorers. He has great vision that he utilizes with his showstopping passes and his shooting range extends well beyond the arc.     Vijay is a lengthy, fast shooting guard that can score at will against the toughest defenders willing to take on the challenge of guarding him. His rapid release and quick recognition skills make him a lethal threat offensively; one the opposition definitely has to game plan for every time. He can change directions in an instant and he's an excellent decision-maker off the dribble, whether that be a sneaky pass to an open teammate or shot creation for himself on the drive. His jumper is beautiful with easy three-point range, and he knows how to finish through contact to rack up points at the charity stripe.     Luca is an energetic, skilled combo guard that can leave his defenders in the dust while consistently setting up his teammates with high-percentage opportunities. His vision is off the charts and he's an excellent passer off the dribble. He's a great shooter and can pour in points any time he gets hot, which is often, but he doesn't make that the sole focus of his game. Dassanayake is a true two-way guard that can defend fiercely with the best competition on the floor. He uses his speed, footwork, and non-stop hustle to leave his opposing assignments frustrated and unsuccessful on both ends.     Jaydon is a smart, skilled lefty with incredible footwork and a nice ability to score from all over the court. He uses his pump fakes effectively to work his way into wide open opportunities and leave his opponents in a tizzy of frustrated defeat. His pull-up jumper is lethal, and he has an excellent decision-making ability when it comes to quickly identifying which teammates have the best opportunities. He has great hands defensively and can rack up steals without getting into foul trouble. He never seems overwhelmed or stressed, consistently displaying patience as he figures out the next winning play he and his teammates can make.     Caleb is a clever, hard-working point guard that knows how to put his team in winning positions consistently. His ballhandling ability can be tough for defenders to keep up with and he displays no fear driving to the rim when he sees an opportunity. I love how hard Smith hustles on both ends of the floor, whether it's cleaning the offensive glass for second-chance opportunities, deflecting passes defensively for easy fast break buckets the other way, or finishing at the rim and immediately jumping into a defensive position to guard the opposing inbound passer. Caleb is a winning player that never gives up on plays and puts himself and his teammates in a great position to succeed every time he steps on the floor.
