Grassroots Finale: 7th Grade Defenders

North Augusta, SC — The Grassroots Finale brought the summer AAU schedule to a close with 26 seventh grade teams competing in North Augusta, as Demone Harrison Basketball Club defeated The Collective Elite in the championship game. After highlighting the top athletes and ball-handlers from the seventh grade division, our coverage continues with a look at the top defenders. The players featured below impacted games with their ability to pressure the basketball, stay in front of their assignment, create turnovers, contest shots, and use their length, quickness, strength, and competitiveness on the defensive end...    Jaiden Beasley consistently disrupted opposing guards with his defense at the Grassroots Finale. He did an excellent job containing the basketball, cutting off penetration and preventing guards from comfortably getting into their offense. Beasley stayed patient in individual matchups and rarely gave up easy lanes off the dribble. His ability to limit perimeter creators was a clear strength of his game.     Tayden Jackson had the quickness and lateral movement to match shifty point guards at the Grassroots Finale. He mirrored the basketball well in one-on-one situations, staying square and making it difficult for opponents to turn the corner. Jackson rarely surrendered a clean path into the paint and proved comfortable defending guards with speed and change of direction. His ability to move his feet defensively gives him an intriguing trait to follow moving forward.     Astn Mills supplied plenty of grit defensively for DHBC on its way to winning the 7th grade division at the Grassroots Finale. He embraced the less glamorous work, fighting through actions, contesting possessions and refusing to give opponents anything easy. Mills played with an edge and consistently found ways to bother the player he was assigned to guard. That scrappy mentality was a valuable part of DHBC's championship success.     Ziyon Simmons was one of the more versatile defenders we watched at the Grassroots Finale. He guarded multiple positions and had success against players with different sizes and skill sets. Simmons moved well enough to defend on the perimeter while also having the physicality to handle bigger matchups. His defensive versatility was a consistent part of his impact.     Jeremiah Williams provided his team with an athletic defender capable of taking on several different matchups at the Grassroots Finale. He used his quickness to stay in front on the perimeter and had the size to hold up against bigger players when needed. Williams could switch assignments without becoming a defensive liability, giving his team more options with its matchups. His athleticism was a major part of what made him effective defensively.
