Section Power Rankings

Mankato East - East returns three players from their state tournament rotation last year including a shooter and some size. Likely need some playmaking to develop but they will be good again.

St. Peter - The Saints have a new coach who will have the luxury of a talented and experienced backcourt. The problem is size, this is going to be a very small team unless some youth steps into the frontcourt with some length.

Marshall - the Tigers were just over .500 last season but they return their leading scorer, Marshall has four of their top seven guys back AND they get [player_tooltip player_id='2840811' first='Jayden' last='Meister'] back from injury. They are a bit of a tough team to predict but if the guard play is there they can surely win this section and go to state for the first time in ten years (although they did win the section in 2020).

New Ulm - New Ulm was 14-13 last season and only had one senior on the roster. That means they have the experience to get to 20 wins, they just need the chemistry to be there to get 20 wins. Another really good team that could win the section if things click. They were 1-4 combined vs East, Marshall and St. Peter last year and that needs to improve.

Mankato West - West needs to take a nice step this year. They started three underclassmen last year for an 11-win team. Can West replace one of the teams in the top four? They should have the talent to do so, but the senior class needs to have a few guys step up to have that success.

Hutchinson - Hutch won just five games last season and they lost their top three scorers to graduation. There are a few good up and comers but it could take a year before they are competing for the section final or semi-finals.

Worthington - Top two scores are back, they won seven games last year and while not contenders, they could win ten or eleven games.

Preseason All Section 2AAA

First Team

[player_tooltip player_id='2815371' first='Owen' last='Potts'] of St. Peter (Sr). Owen will be the best player in the section this year after his 19 a game last year and his excellent 17u season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2417567' first='Oliver' last='Voigt'] of Marshall (Jr). A 16 point per game scorer at 6'7 inside last year, Oliver has a chance to take a big step and be a dominant player in the section. Just picked up an offer from Southwest Minnesota State.

[player_tooltip player_id='2815445' first='Levi' last='Hopp'] of New Ulm (Sr)). Levi is the playmaker and leader, and he averaged 15 points, five boards, three assists, and three steals a game.

[player_tooltip player_id='2815441' first='Mitchell' last='Hopp'] of New Ulm (Sr). Mitchell is the leading scorer at 16 a game for New Ulm plus four boards plus he provides a physical, tough approach.

[player_tooltip player_id='2916881' first='Mal' last='Jock'] of Mankato West (Soph). Mal is one of the elite scorers in the sophomore class and might just be the most natural scorer in his class. He scored 15 points a game last year as a frosh.

Second Team

[player_tooltip player_id='2840811' first='Jayden' last='Meister'] of Marshall (Sr). Jayden missed last season to a knee injury and we really look forward to seeing him back on the court to have a good year.

[player_tooltip player_id='2848283' first='Briggs' last='Meyer'] of Mankato East (Sr). Top returning player for the Cougars who scored nearly ten points a game last season at forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='2423655' first='Griffin' last='Schott'] of Mankato East (Sr). A shooter that scored seven points a game last season and should be the top Cougar guard this year.

[player_tooltip player_id='2860798' first='Isaiah' last='Schroeder'] of Worthington (Sr). Schroder is a 6'4 forward that scored 16 plus points a game last year and is a sleeper to be a top player in the section this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='3426985' first='Alex' last='Korir'] of St. Peter (Sr). A ten point per game 5'10 guard from a season ago that can play either backcourt spot.

Third Team

[player_tooltip player_id='2835444' first='Evan' last='Senske'] of Mankato West (Jr). Evan scored 13 points per game last year as a 6'0 guard and should take another step forward this winter.

[player_tooltip player_id='3426984' first='Ethan' last='Potts'] of St. Peter (Sr). The brother of Owen, Ethan is a 5'10 guard that scored nine a game last season and will pair with Alex and Owen to make a tough backcourt.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140568' first='Caleb' last='Meyer'] of Worthington (Sr). Caleb was an all league player scoring 15-16 a game last season.

Owen Castlemen of New Ulm (Jr). The third leading scorer from last season at 11 points a contest.

Gavin Hering of Mankato East (Sr). A 6'5 reserve big from a year ago that moves into a bigger role.

Fourth Team

[player_tooltip player_id='2880880' first='Isaiah' last='Homrighausen'] of St. Peter (Soph). A young six foot guard who emerged late in the season and will be another backcourt weapon

Tanner Becker of New Ulm (Sr). A 6'2 wing that scored 9.5 points a game last winter.

[player_tooltip player_id='2560528' first='Ryan' last='Steinke'] of Mankato West (Jr). Scored eight points a game as a sophomore.

[player_tooltip player_id='2848291' first='Matthew' last='Ortloff'] of Hutchinson (Sr). Matt is the top returning scorer for Hutch at eight points a game.

2AAA Summary

I think this section will be one of the top four sections in the state this year, maybe even top three. The race for the title likely comes down to Mankato East, Marshall or St. Peter but New Ulm and Mankato West have an outside shot and that Worthington team has a couple pretty good seniors too.

Mankato East won't have a star like they have had, but they have gone to state the last six seasons and are pushing for a 7th. They have the players to make a run. St. Peter has a great backcourt returning but they have no size. Marshall has great size, will they have the guards? Mankato West has some young talent, are they a year away? And New Ulm returns everything, but can that program finally take the next step in winning?

This is one of my favorite section races this year because of all these questions.
