June 4th-6th I attended the annual Best in Basketball Summer Invitational. It is the premier warm up event for the prestigious Section-7 with 20 Section-7 weekend teams plus others who have a chance to qualify for the weekend.

I watched every team 2-3 times and came up with many different categories to place each prospect.

Here were the Skilled Bigs

[player_tooltip player_id='2466071' first='Nick' last='Appenzeller'] Desert Edge

A good sized power forward is a plus rebounder in his area and will block shots with his length and reach. He will score it with drop steps, pick and roll finishes rolling to the basket and he can rip baseline in traffic. He will shoot it with mid-range pull-ups and earn trips to the free throw line.

[player_tooltip player_id='2337274' first='Brig' last='Bowden'] Mesa

A strong framed face-up post player has nice skill and strength. He will score with step back threes, left hand finishes with players around him, quick drop step moves and finish with either hand and pick and roll finishes or he will get fouled. He is a smart passer and rebounds well and walls up or will block the shot.

[player_tooltip player_id='2457854' first='Grant' last='Budd'] Pinnacle

A bigger power forward or post player moves well from end to end. He can cover bigs in the paint and then switch onto guards in a pinch. He rebounds well in his area and can alter shots. He will score with put backs off the glass and get to the foul line.

[player_tooltip player_id='2878044' first='Novar' last='Byrd'] Red Mountain (Pictured)

A power forward who is getting more aggressive as he ages. He rebounds well and will score with offensive rebound put backs and has soft hands inside to catch tough passes to go up quickly. He can face-up from mid-range and in and has a more polished hook shot. He runs the floor well and can defend from inside and out.

[player_tooltip player_id='3474353' first='Brody' last='Knollmiller'] Highland

A strong framed power forward is built like a linebacker. He is very hard to move inside and uses his girth and soft hands to rebound in and out of his area. He will score with cuts off the ball and offensive rebound put backs. He is also capable from the three point line.

[player_tooltip player_id='2295693' first='Maddox' last='Lazor'] Basha

The big man is steadily improving. He held his own in the prestigious Pangos AA Camp and he carried it over to the AIA. He rebounds everything in his area and boxes out better then most. He will score with perimeter jumpers, hook shots, layups and dunks. He is a phenomenal passer for a big and collects steals.

[player_tooltip player_id='2320420' first='Blake' last='Roberts'] Casteel

A thicker framed power forward made the move from Basha to Casteel. He rebounds well in his area with his strong hands, girth and frame. The high academic player boxes out his opponent and he will score with put backs off the glass and mid-range jumpers.

[player_tooltip player_id='2889279' first='Jace' last='Parris'] Mesa

One of the tallest and longest post players in the sophomore class and in the AIA. He uses his size and fluidity to be a top of the food chain shot blocker who moves well from end to end. He scores with layups and keeps the ball high down low. He is a very good passer with some high-low action.
